I have a 440 steel crank. I know it's 3.75 stroke, because I measured the half stroke and it's 1.8750. Mains are 440 size. Main seal ridges fall in the direction of a clockwise rotation engine, so I know it's not marine. 6 bolt flange and drilled for manual transmission. Even though I know "what it is" I'd still like to see a casting number "somewhere". I've looked it over pretty good and haven't seen one. I guess it's possible I over looked it. Where are they usually located?

Rob, I believe forged cranks are stamped with a number, not cast in. look where it could be stamped easily.

I don't think you're going to find a number on a forged crank. The late model cast cranks had casting numbers as well as a 400 or a 440 ID but forged stuff usually doesn't have much info on them. Sometimes there will be one number or one letter stamped in them but I don't know what it means.

Isnt the 3rd counter weight where they would stamp info about irregular journal size? That's the only numbers I know of.

Yeah, there are a few skewed looking stamped numbers on a counter weight or two.

Thank yall for all the responses.

I have found that the full part number will be stamped in a line on the counter-weight on the thin outside edge of the forged cranks, usually back a ways from the front.... However, I don't see them often on the 70's cranks, usually only on the 60's ones. I've seen a few of them over the years, but not enough to say what they did when, and give a definative answer as to the rhyme or reason.

If it's to be found, it'll be on the 3rd from the front or 3rd from the rear counter weight, more often than not- unreadable!
