Decent Slant 6 carb, intake, header setup

-
I know this is an older posting, but I am getting closer to doing some changes to my 225. I would like to remove the head and have some work done. Therefore, I think it would be best to find another head to work on while I keep driving my car. I have been told that 68 or newer heads have a better chamber. Is this true? And, would any of the newer heads work with my solid lifters? Also, should I use a copper head gasket and new ARP bolts?

Same head bolts, all heads are interchangeable only peanut heads (dont have drool tubes and you have to remove the head to get to the lifters), and yea 68 and up heads are better, i used the stock fel pro Gasket mill that head .100th i went from 7:8 CR to 9:1 CR just with the mill. Also measure piston height at TDC and CC the heads to see if they never been cut, i ported out three heads with amazon carbide bit 20 bucks dont go crazy just clean up imperfections. Hit the floors on the ports. i say you get two heads a good one and a junk one to practice. Also clean up the threads on the head bolt use some PB blaster to chase them down or else you might snap them when torquing. Doing this alone is better than just slapping on a bigger carb, next would be a camshaft swap. GOOD LUCK!

Looking to make my slant 6 a lil' badass for the time being. What are some decent set ups? Daily driver conditions.

I played the Slant 6 game for 10 years. I even had Doug Dutra build my motor with most of his speed secrets for them. It was a great running Slant 6, but it was still a 18+ second quarter mile car.

Save your money, tune your stock motor well and consider the following.

In the end, I pulled it and put a junkyard 5.9 Magnum with a 727 in my car. I set it up so I had EFI, and did the beer keg manifold mod with headers and a small cam.

I got 4 to 6 mpg better fuel economy, it was dramatically faster and it sounded way better.

I've since installed a 408 Magnum with ported Eddie's, a healthy hydraulic roller cam and hooked it to an Extreme Automatic's Stage 2 200R4 with a 3800 rpm lock-up torque converter and 3.90 gears. The car is like Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde. gets 14 mpg around town, 17+ at 70 mph on the freeway and beat 2 Hellcats in the drag races at Willow Springs a few years back.

I will never go back to a slant.

Also if you wanna Gain horsepower on the cheap 14Hp recurve your DIZZY use the FBO limiter plate cost less than 60 bucks or plate and springs which your going to have to do once you up the CR

I drive a 1980 D150 with a stock slant and 2 V8 '95 Grand Cherokees. My wife's GC is a stock 5.2 and I swapped a 5.9 into my '95. Both have the stock Holley MPI. The SOTP power difference between the 5.2 and 5.9 is major. And the difference between both those V8 Magnums and the slant is more like a chasm. I gave the removed 5.2 block away to get it out of the way and I am regretting it. A mostly stock 5.2 GC will do about a 17.5s quarter at a mile high according to a friend's Gtech.

I bought that 5.9 motor for $800 with less than 100k miles on it and it bolted in as a direct replacment. The benefit and satisfaction were immediate and no tweaking required. For a hack like myself, it was nice not having to know and worry about quench, deck height, compression etc.

My mechanic friend suggested that I take the slant 6 out and replace it with a 318 with 360 heads. To do or not to do, is the question.

360 heads will lower your CR on your 318 depending on piston height, swap a magnum 318 stock camshaft is nice better heads and compression and roller camshaft you will need to change the center link, upgrade brakes convert to v8 gas pedal new trans also new drive shaft slip yoke exhaust system radiator etc

Unless I'm overlooking it, we dont know the vehicle
In my 71 duster I reused the gas pedal and the center link, when swapping from a /6 to an LA

hes got a 64 dart? i think lol but yes your right the later abodies already have the cable set up early doesnt

I’m driving a ‘63 Dart wagon, stock engine, bbs, stick shift on column, 3.23 rear, duals with hand made front exhaust, and a pair of glass packs. Loud, of course. I find this car is fantastic to drive. Most 4 cylinder cars can out run me easily. Still like the car. I’m too cheap to spend bucks on more power. Sometimes at a stop light one of those fart-butt cars hears my car and on green light they think I will race. Kinda funny.

My boys 7 and 11 are crazy over our 64 Dart GT. This past Fall, a truck pulled along side of me and started revving his engine and looking over at me. He could not see my boys in the back seat. When he took off I heard a pop from his exhaust which was probably a turbo. But, you have to laugh when someone tries to get you to show off your car.

Love that air cleaner,

i let a buddy of mine borrow the duster a while ago
he said that while he was driving, he pulled up to a red light on a 3 lane road here in town
a late model audi who (and i qoute) "always drives like hes a top dog" pulled up along side of him
so my buddy rolled down the window, revved the 408 and looked over at the guy
the guy shook his and and declined to go for it, and his girlfriend thought it was hilarious

I have to ask why that slow in the quarter, I did better w/a mild Crane cam, 3.55's, 318 BBD, 6-1 DC header, stock valves........17.0's @78mph.......
what's up with that?

Does your car have mini tubs to run slicks?

I'm thinking probably didn't dial in the motor with the rearend gears etc. slantsix' s need 3.55 to get up and go. But regardless have both a fast slant and a fast v-eight. Funny though when I pull up the v-8 car no one wants to race , it's always with my dart lol.

I love my slant truck, used to commute around town and run truck errands. But I fear the freeway. I only know Magnum 5.2/5.9... the blocks are nearly identical. I can't see a reason for the 318 if you have an open choice, with the 360 having so much more power under the curve in stock form. The numbers don't really reflect the difference you feel.

My brother, an old school Chrysler mechanic, suggested a 360 transplant, as well. If I go that way, I must do the stroker 408. If the slant can do 9-12 second quarter mile runs, Why is it that everyone insists on a V-8 transplant? Is it because the slanty is not a good all around street performance engine? Or, is it just the easier and more cost effective way to get something done?

No one is insisting anything. The slant is a labor of love and they look so cool under the hood. Just do what makes you happy. :)

The gear ratio was a somewhat rare ratio just under 3 to 1. I can't remember now.Doug Dutra recommended it, so I ran it. They were nearly perfect for the torque curve of the motor he build for me, but not ideal for quarter mile racing. They were sure nice on the freeway, but I never got better than 14- 15 mpg at 70mph.

Now days, I'm running 3.91's with a .67 overdrive and lock-up converter spun by an injected 408 Magnum. I get 17 mpg at 70 mph with the top down and it runs in the low 12's high 11's.

No, the 275/60-15 Nitto Drag Radials bolted on with no cutting. They are great street tires if you don't live where it freezes hard.
Thanks, I did not know that. Do you have pictures?
