I found a seller on facebook marketplace whom has the more desirable slant head with the improved combustion chamber. What is a fair price for a head that needs to be rebuilt? I want to know what I should offer for it.

Good question, most of the time people give them away! I would not go more than $50. Odessa Cly Heads has a rebuilt unleaded head for $400 not talking shipping. So if you went 50, you would have 350 left for the machine shop. They usually need guides and half the exhaust valves. If you surface it there is another $75-100 to get a little more compression. Let us know how it turns out!

Thank you, he just said he would take $50 for the head and he has a pushbutton 904 which was used in a race car which he will sell to me for a very low price. It is a 4 hour drive into Pennsylvania for me, but how can I resist?

The trans if used for racing should have a deep pan and a high stall converter. Might have some parts value if he is telling the truth. You can see very easy if it has the deep pan, stock is very shallow. If the pan is there it would be a good indication of some good parts inside. Down side is the early trans doesn't interchange with the changed crank flange around 68.

You can have a convertor made that has the early guts in a later case. Then they work fine with the 68 n up cranks

I am collecting the parts I need to perform the modifications. Since I need to remove the head, top replace the cam, I felt it would be better to find the better combustion style head and have it worked over, maybe some 318 valves etc. Then I can continue driving the car until I have everything. I just purchased a 1964 A body V-8 accelerator pedal assembly. I have a high school friend that races, and I am seeing if he can find me a good machine shop.

What pushbutton 904 transmissions will work on my 64 Dart GT slant 6. And, how do I identify different year pushbutton 904's?

Sure it does. You just need a spacer ring on the smaller converter hub in the larger 68 crank receiver.

Pushbutton trans were all prior to 65 iirc. 67 and earlier have the 1/4" smaller convertor hub but i think the pushbutton trans had a <66 cable shifter instead of the 66 and newer sector shaft type shifter.

Really need to clarify. All pushbutton 904's will interchange. Not all cable shifted 904's interchange. Pushbutton 904 was from 1960 to 1964. 1965 was a "cable shifted 904, but used a "floor shifter" or columm lever, not the pushbuttons. The transmissions are similar, but the valve bodies are different. The valve bodies can be swapped. There are a few other differences, but they only pertain to when rebuilding. Also slant six, and v-8 transmissions have different cases, so cannot be swapped, but most internal parts can be swapped.
Just an example: My 66 Cuda had a 1965 904, with a 1964 PB valve body, converted to full manual, with the push button shifter mounted in a console, between the bucket seats. I also did the conversion to a conventional U-joint from the B&T joint.
Clear as mud?

I do have one cable shifted 904 that has a longer tail shaft/housing, then any of my others. I have no idea what it is from, other then slant six, and visually looks like a 1965.

Thank you for the helpful information. I have the transmission, head and driveshaft in the back of my truck. The seller surprised me and gave me the intake, exhaust manifold, and 1 barrel carburetor with the head. And, the air cleaner. It was well worth the 4 hour drive. I do not have enough knowledge of trasmissions to know what was done to it. The seller indicated that the owner drag raced slant sixes and passed away. The transmission has a carrying handle attached because he apparently swapped this transmission in and out of different cars. I will have to find someone whom has the knowledge to look it over.

Here are some pictures. I will probably sell the intake, exhaust manifold, and carburetor. I do not have a reason to keep them unless I wanted to have the intake converted to accept a larger carburetor. I am still undecided on whether to use a dual Weber intake, or go with a Clifford Hyperpak with Eldelbrock four barrel. And, I am considering a Holley 390 intake system. Which intake system is better for a street performance car? I am not planning on drag racing.

The numbers on the transmission are 2408002P and 0653009. I believe that it is a 1963? And, the numbers indicate Heavy Duty slant 6 transmission. So, was this a good find?

Throttle pressure lever is still there. Its a cable operated trans so that (TPL) is the only thing on that shaft. If he raced that trans (looked like he did if he moved it from car to car) its probably got a manual valve body as stated. The hyper pak intake is not great for the street unless you plan on driving it over 3000 RPM and have the cam to match that range, that's where that intake comes on at. Stick with the super six, clifford 6=8 (4bbl) intake or your dual 1bbl setup.

I run eddy 500 Avs 89 jets up Front and .86 in the rear with a Offy intake carb is pointed at the passenger fender, i get constant 20mpg with 3.55 in a 7.25 city and bit of highway nothing really over 65mph, Dart is pretty quick, since your doing the head add 340 springs and mill that bad boy to boost comp, add the bigger hyper pak valves little port job and you got a little beast! also trim guides if going with a cam over .460 lift

What source is out there to purchase 7.25 gear sets?

Since the serial numbers on this transmission indicate a 1963 car and it is the Heavy Duty model, is this a good find?

Street driven car in NY state.
I'd use a manifold with carb heat or it'll be cold blooded until fully warmed up. I think that's an Offy or get a factory Super Six.

The Clifford intakes with the built in pre heater would not be sufficient during the Summer and Fall? Or the Aussiespeed intake with an optional pre heater would not work, as well?

How many members whom live in a cold climate use an aftermarket intake manifold with a pre heater? And, do you have any problems?

your going to need heat under that carb, i have clifford headers with four barrel intake with water cooled adapter plate i bought for my offy works great, i have a friend who also runs the same set up with no carb heat gets 15-16 mpg when i get in the 19-20mpg range with heat.
