Upstate NY botched paint job help

Easy fix!!!

Wet sand the whole car with 800-1000 grit, touch up any areas that you may have sanded through on the orange.

Tape of the orange to clean up the lines on your inserts, do a light coat of sealer over the faded area insert. Paint your white first and make sure you have good coverage, 1/4 tape along the edge of the white, paint your blue fade. In order to make it look faded, you'll have to turn the gun pattern and flow down to make it spray like an air brush. It may take 5-6 coats to cover but this is what it takes to achieve that Faded Look, let the blue completely dry. Then go back and French Tape along the top of the blue before you apply the red, just make sure that the paint falls in the tape edge and not directly apply it as it will create a hard line and not the fade your after. Make sure you keep the gun settings for the red as you did the blue and just take your time.

Once everything is dry, you could have someone pinstripe it between the orange and white, then clear the whole car!!!

You have to remember that cars that had these crazy schemes from the 50-80's were painted with Lacquer Paint and they had like 12-14 coats of clear on top, they would clear them with 8-10 coats, water sand the clear with 1000 and reclear them another 4-6 coats and then wetsand and buff them out.

I had a body shop for over 12 years and I did some crazy jobs like this for guys with street and drag cars, it's a lot of work but if you take your time you can fix this with no problem!!!

Hope this helps!!

I agree, needs some lettering and decals to break it all up and take your eye away a bit. Research some vintage pics. Have fun with it!
To me it looks like the stuff you would have seen from late 60s to early 70s at the strip. That type of paint job back then usually wasn't perfect. If you look at old pictures of even some of the fancier cars they looked a lot better a 20 ft. I like the idea of decals and a good "name" on the side to give it the old school drag car look. Steve

Plymouth or Duster on the door would be cool also.

I appreciate all the replies folks.I did layout the design and still like it. I also dig that this style of paint is appealing to a select few which is cool. It was an attempt to break the norm of single color with factory stripes which is safe but looks killer.
I like the scheme but the execution is atrocious.

Orange is a pretty hard color to get colors that go with it. The blue wouldent be my first choice or the white for that matter.

I totally get the look you were going for. Kudos for wanting 2 be original. as a body man by trade im appalled at the fact that the guy that did this considered this a fade. Looks like he just made a normal pass of color with no fading with a paint gun on the edges. With that being said my advice is dont settle for anything less than want YOU want. It may cost more to do it but at the end of the day its your car. So find what makes u happy. Good luck my mopar friend

I can promise you, the execution blows and the final result is nowhere near what we talked about. Quite frankly the paint job is the tip of the iceberg on some of the corners cut. I'll take the high road and not publicly bash the guy although I did consider parking the car in his living room. For now I'll try some suggestions from you guys on sort of salvaging what I have. Some more sanding and a wide pinstripe to break up some the mess are in order. Jeff

Top pic shows the two different ideas I was after. Second pic is how I should've left it....

Wish ya the best in getting it sorted out.

Big fan of the 70's look. Just my opinion, but I'd ditch the blue unless you're a Broncos fan. The lines on the panels you did on the car look good though. Perhaps give some thought to getting a gun, and get some old panels to practice on, and then do it yourself? Use a couple of complimentary colors to the orange like white and silver....white panel, a silver border, maybe a little flake in the white to make it pop. Then maybe practice doing an overlay with some light silver scales, or shoot a hint of silver through lace to give you a nice pattern? Spray over enough scrap until you feel like you've mastered a technique you like.
