a question for anybody with an original 65 or 66 formula S car does it have 10" brakes on it?

Thanks for any responses. The reason I ask is I have a 65 Valiant 2nd owner have owned it since 1971 it has a hi-po 273 4-speed and has 10" brakes on it. Have always claimed its basically a formula S Valiant but have never seen another one like it.

Any responses appreciated.

I think (think) the S cars had 10" brakes but I don't see those listed on the Formula S components. You might want to look it up on the Hamtramck site for sure. My 66 Dart has 10" brakes and has the Rallye package but doesn't include HD brakes according to the book. I just found in the spec book on the Hamtramck site that the V8 cars had 10" brakes.

Ive srapped out 2 66 B-Cuda Formula S cars, that had 10 in front brakes. Kelsy/Hayes disc were an option, at the time.

I've had 2 65 Barracudas, although none were S cars. The early build 273 2bbl 4 sp car had 9" drums the later build 273 2bbl auto car had the 10" drums on it.

No Valiant Formula S, but could be ordered with some of the S goodies

I have the build sheet for my car. 1965 Barracuda non-S car, suspension package w/sway bar, 273 4bbl, 4 speed, power brakes, 9 inch drums.

Could be but all the information I saw made no mention of V8's coming with 9" brakes. Show us some factory information if it is possible. We are still discussing the possibilities. I looked at 66 because that's what I have maybe there was a change between 65 and 66.

It is on my build sheet . I am not in a position to dig the sheet out as I have moved since finding it. It would take me days to find it and I am not even going to try.

Remember the old saw - Never say never with Ma Mopar. Lots of stuff got ordered that wasn't on the order form, and lots of stuff ended up on cars coming off the line that weren't on the build sheet. I kept wondering why I kept coming across 1972 6 cylinder 4 door Darts and Valiants with 8 3/4 rears until I realized it was the last year for 8 3/4 A-bodies and they were dumping their stock.

Lets keep digging for information. May be we can find out why, and get chryslerfat to change his red X's that he handed out.

FWIW, after going to disc I gave my 9" drum set off my '69 S (383) to a member here to make some space. Sold the LCA's (with sway tabs) to another.

My car also came with 13 inch tires on the broadcast sheet.
I found something. I bet your Barracuda was a standard built car with 9" brakes, the Performance group (273 and other goodies) and the Sport Group because you said you had 13" tires. Did you have a 3 spoke sport steering wheel?
Now for the brakes. In the AMA specs there's a chart of what brakes came on what car models. You would probably have to dig on your fender tag and build sheet to confirm your model and the particular brakes you have. I haven't found what the AV1 and AV2 cars are specifically, but if yours was a AV1 it came with 9" brakes standard and 10" optional. The AV2 cars came with 10" brakes standard.

Now, The AMA spec sheets are dated 7-10-1964 which is around the start of the 65 model year. Barracuda's weren't released until mid year so this information is for Valiants. You would probably have to go to the 1966 AMA specs to see if anything changed.

My car is an early 65 so that may hold true.

Dang, no AMA specs listed for 1966 on the Hamtramck website.
