Maybe, just maybe,I'll actually get around to doing something...seeing as how I've only been here 20 years.Geez! Where does time go? The garage has trusses and I'd like to use rock wool insulation.Yes,I know i can Google it but I'd prefer ideas from people that have done this themselves. There is no storage in the ceiling so that will be closed off.The electrical will be moved outside the walls, ala European. I get the put the insulation between joists, what about above it?How do you lay it in with all the bracing? I need to picture how it's going to look before starting.(and that is probably another reason I never get things finished cause once I visualize it done,I'm done). How about covering for walls/ceiling? Drywall? Plywood? Metal? A friend did plywood but I'd want to coat it in fireproofing(?) paint. If drywall was used, I suppose taping is needed so it doesn't leak air? Metal would be cool BUT...Any ideas and PICTURES would be helpful. Of course, there is 20 plus years of accumulation that needs to be moved around to work any area at a time.Hmm,maybe I'd clean up a bit? Thanks for any ideas!Bob

My shop is a pole barn, so it has 2x6 purlins for the walls. I cut regular R33 insulation for each space in the walls and covered that in plywood so it would not get destroyed if I bumped into it. That was a really good decision. For the upper walls and ceilings, I called in some insulation guys who knocked it out in a day and a half, some of the best money I ever spent on the shop. It was about $2300 to do the uppers you see in white. They covered it in some kind of sturdy white sheet material that really helps reflect light and made the shop a LOT brighter. Here are before and after photos.

I have an attached 2 car garage and I added a 3rd car, on the outside walls I used 2x6's to get 6" insulation in. I can't show any pics because every wall is covered in sheetrock and have shelving against them all. Still not enough room.

I bought 3/8 plywood from a salvage place. It was cheaper than drywall. They used it to drive a tow motor on when moving a company into a building. The other side was clean. I insulated the walls and ceiling. Pull down ladder for storage above. One electric ceiling heater in the winter. 24x24.

Halfafish, thanks for the info. Are those radiant heaters in the second picture?
tonysrt,thank-you and yes,never enough room!
my5thmopar,thanks for the idea of salvage place!

i prefer using the foam board sheets as well, but i dont know how it relates in insulation/price comparison

but if your budget is like mine...you my need to go this route

you took an entire foot of your floorspace, turned it into insulation and it didnt give you any room ?

Look into having it spray foam insulated. It will not only do a good job on insulating but also does a great job at sealing the air leaks

I had my Steel building quoted for this. 30X36 top to bottom was right at 8k. Where's my Member only jacket lol.... If you can swing it your idea is the deal for sure....

Bat insulation, vapor barrier and plywood on the walls 4 ft up from floor. Steel interior siding up to ceiling and also on ceiling. White reflects light well but apain to keep clean especially if welding. Blow in insulation in attic is cheapest and quickest.

I'm not sure my budget could afford that snazzy looking coat...and if I got one,my wife would want one too! But it's a good idea.
toplscuda, take care of two problems at once.
ch1ll,Thanks for the hint with the combo.White was my thought...forgot about it getting dirty.I've got blown in insulation in the attic of the house. It seems to lose some efficency each year-settling? or maybe just me getting older and less tolerant of the cold.

If you're going to drywall the ceiling get the blown in, very easy, go to lowes they will loan you the blower

Do you have vented soffits? If you don't, you will need to vent them before you insulate, and will need to add gable vents if you don't already have some. Add baffles on the soffit ends to keep the insulation you add in the ceiling from stopping up the air flow. You need air flow above the insulation to keep your roofing shingles from baking off from the heat below in the attic after you close it all up. Insulate it with paper faced fiberglass batts, with the paper facing into your work space. I would do sheetrock on the inside, but that's just me.

My shop is a 33x30 pole barn. I used 1/2 plywood on walls and ceiling. Blew insulation in ceiling and used 4" thick ridged foam boards used on rubber roofs in the walls. Came in 4x8 sheets and found it Craigslist for $3 a sheet.

That's a steal on those foam boards. I used foil faced foam boards on my ceiling and a foil type tape on the seams. Don't use regular duct tape, it starts to come off after awhile. The foil keeps things brighter in there too.

I wonder what effect something like a spray on would have? Like undercoating or some such?

69FBCuda,thanks for letting me know about Lowes.
JDMopar,no venting for now,I would open them up like I did the house, window screen the whole soffit.Probably use a temperature control exhaust fan thru roof or one of the ends.
4spd340Swinger,thanks for that idea also.
Scamp Rohnda,I'd probably still cover the walls to protect the foam...but maybe use it for the ceiling?
RustyRatRod,spray foam insulation?

No. Exactly what I said. Undercoating or rino lining or some such.

I put up vapour barrier and aspenite. Blew in the insulation about 6”.
Could sheetrock it if you have poly on first.
Im in there pretty much 7 days/week. I like it warm in the winter.

I also used foil tape on the seems.

RustyRatRod,that would be a unique texture...orange peel?
Tooljunkie, good to know and where else would get a better protect testing!
4spd340swinger,have the tape, used it on duct work.

You realize that a 2x6 is 2" less than a 2x4, so if I save any energy it would be worth it. Only lost on front wall side wall & garage door.

I am insulating my whole shop with mineral wool. I am very happy with it. The stuff is fireproof, water resistant, and will not mold if it does get wet. I have the first 8ft of wall done already and about half of the 8-12ft section of the walls done. Nothing on the trusses yet and you can walk in the shop after its closed up all day and no joke it is 15-20 degrees cooler inside. My walls are on 16inch centers and the stuff fits tight. No staples and no paper. I did go all the way around the shop with great stuff foam spray between the metal and the bottom wall plates. I am using osb on the interior walls. Highly recommend the wool.

Thanks 1995dak! The properties of the mineral wool is what is so attractive. If I had know about when I insulated the house,I would have used it. I'd be interested to hear what you do with the ceiling. Thanks again! Bob

Same thing on the ceiling. Trusses are on 24in and they make it for that also.
