Anyone have experience with the Flowtech Raptor - 3 chamber welded mufflers ?
I am thinking about a 3" set for my build.
2 chamber mufflers would prob be too loud.
These seem decent , and reasonably priced !
Thanks for any input !

Yes, seems I recall they were loud but not as loud as some other name brands. I'll see if I have any data on them.

Actually, they were not that bad. I was confused them with another FlowTEch version. They flow about as much as the larger flowmaster but were relatively quiet.
FlowTech Raptor 50052FLT 4" x 10" x 14", 48% flow of open pipe, 70, 82, 90 dBA and 71, 85, 91 dBA with an X

Tom, how about a welded case DM Super Turbo! I forgot to tell you that's what we are working on right now. :) Maybe the topic starter would be interested in a demo pair? :)

Hi CCASS, Did the patent run out? In which case you can modify and improve?

Wow, they should have renewed it! :)

I am dying to change my mufflers, don't like the way they sound.
Any recommendations, I'm willing to try anything at this time.
340, six pack.
550 solid cam.
4.10 rear.

I just hate how they sound when I star to open up the engine.
They seem kind of loud for my liking as well, I really don't mind the loudness, so long as they sound nice.
I can't recall but I used to have some old style walker Hemi mufflers and they sounded nice A
Any input will truly be appreciated.
Thanks.

@MAPS,

What muffler do you have now?
How long is the case?
How is the exhaust system done, true duals, H or X pipe?
Between the 3 basic styles of muffler, the glass pack, chambered and the turbo, which sound is it you like best?

I would love a demo pair ! 3" in , 3" out.

I have a 3" X-pipe system behind my 451 with Summit turbo mufflers, AND glasspacks, with tailpipes all the way to the rear bumper. Still think it's kind of loud. Maybe I'm too old ;)

Not sure on the size, but I can always measure it
Thanks for the help.

Pipe diameter would help. I’m on my phone and I can’t quite tell, but it looks like a 2-1/2 pipe. I’ll wait on you for that.

Adding an X or the much easier to self install H pipe helps by a few db’s. Adding a resignator. (sp?) would help. But if it is the inside where your finding the noise level uncomfortable, that changes things. It can be easy to fix-ish but you may not like how it looks with glass packs before the mufflers after the X or H pipe added in.

(FWIW, the Magna Flow comes in a stainless shell and has a true inside diameter of the pipe size your using. No neck down on the inside.)

The only other thing I can think of is a pressure wave cancellation box after the header, before the X or H pipe. It’s exact spot would need a dyno, engine or rear wheel run, to see where the effects of the pipe length after the header is cut to.

Then add the X or H into glass packs into the muffler. It is a lot and gets dang busy underneath there for sure. This route is a bit more complicated, time consuming and a basic PIA. (HUGE PIA)

It sounds like Rumblefish is giving you some more sophisticated advice than what I have to offer but I would also encourage you to find some videos of different styles of mufflers too. It's always hard to tell exactly what they will sound like in person (because of the uncontrolled audio recording conditions, etc) but you can get an idea of the general quality of engine sound you can expect.

I have always found Flowmaster/chambered mufflers to offer a boomy/hollow sound. Personally, I don't love it but lots of people do. The Magnaflow/flow through types tend to be a bit more raw/natural sounding IMO. It's probably worth your time to take a listen.

I would like to add that the longer the muffler case, the whiter it will be inside as well as the outside.

Purchase the H pipe and the longer mufflers together and install at the same time to save yourself from a lot of extra work.

When you measure for the max muffler length area available, I basically starts at the front where the floor rises of course but you can make for some small allowances at the axle. Where ever the muffler bracket comes straight down is the max rear wards distance.

Im not sure what the A bodies offer but my late B body housed the long Dyno Max Turbo muffler well.

How loud is too loud? I don't think these are loud others may think they are. PYPES 3inch to 2.5 inch with race pro mufflers. 512 ci rb motor.
