whats up guys getting some new rims for my brothers 68 barracuda it has a 8.75 small bolt pattern rear end. Were going with 255 60 15 on a 7 inch rim would i need 15x7 with 4.5 backspace want it to look like a tucked what do you guys think?

I just put 15x7 rims w/4-1/4" backspace on my '68. I have 245/60 tires on with no spacers. They tuck in nicely in the wheelwells but are only about 5/8" away from the springs. You might want to check your clearance on the inside.

thanks for the reply, do you have big bolt pattern axles of the 5 on 4?

With SBP axles I think a 15x7 with 4.25” of backspace would be the ticket, 4.5” would put you right on the springs. If you had BBP axles then 4.5” would work, BBP axles move the axle flange further out.

Sorry to ask a dumb question but what does SBP & BBP refer to? I assume they have something to do with the rear axle assembly.

No question is dumb, SBP (small bolt pattern 5 on 4 1963-1972)

BBP (big bolt pattern 5 on 4.5 1973 and up)

Yup, what he said for the most part. SBP refers to the 5x4” pattern, BBP refers to the 5x4.5” bolt pattern.

The year split is a little less clear cut. ‘63 to ‘72 all production A-bodies were SBP, both disks and drums.

In ‘73, all of the front disk brake A-bodies went BBP. But cars that had front wheel drums stayed SBP. All of the V8’s got disks, so, SBP was just /6 cars. And some option packages upgraded the /6 cars to disks. In ‘76 they all went disk and the SBP went away.

To add more confusion, in ‘73 the upper control arms changed as well to use the larger ball joint already used on all the other models. Even the 10” SBP drum cars got the large ball joints, so the 73+ drum spindles are different. They also had larger wheel bearings than the earlier drum cars.

Thanx for the history. The small bolt pattern sure limits the choice of aftermarket wheels. I'm sticking with factory Rallyes but did consider Torque Thrusts at one time.

Yup, it sure does limit your choices. If you want to stay with factory reproduction wheels it’s not too bad, but anything other than that and you only have a couple choices.

And then there’s brake hardware. It’s not bad right now, but there were a few years when some of the SBP brake parts weren’t available. A-bodies were the only ones that had it, so it’s a limited market. The BBP brake stuff was used on most of the RWD cars all the way up to the late eighties/early 90’s, so, there’s millions of cars that need those parts.

i just got the front tires 225 60 15 going on a 6.5 or 6inch rim with 4.25 back space? sounds like it will work what you think @72bluNblu

Either one should work. I’ve always used them on a 15x7” with 4.25” of backspace but they’ll fit on a 6” rim too.
