As title says. Want to try my hand at some head porting. I have a few but need some different ones to get in some of the tight spots. Ive bought snap on before, crazy price. I bought a couple from Fastenal yesterday, not as lofty as snap on but still nuts. 3 cost me over $60
I am wanting some of the long shank ones. A point, a tree style, a ball Burr, and a conventional straight one possibly with capability to end-mill/end grind
Suggestions?

MSC DIRECT
Atrax or SGS for carbide. Not the cheapest but good quality. Might want to try Cobalt or HSS for roughing in. Much less expensive takes more abuse.

What is the difference between SC, SL, SN and such when talking different bits?

ok I got 4 Blackhawk brand ones from Fastenal. IDK if this is their "house brand" or if this is an extension of the old Proto/Stanley line of hand tools.

After asking on here I wound up ordering some from a company called "Benchmark Abrasives" I had bought flapper wheels and Roloc cookies from this place in the past/ they had sent me an Email for a "fathers day sale" on burr bits which I blew off at the time, not thinking yet of this project.... I looked on there like 2 days after their sale ended, it was either 10 or 15% off..... I ordered 4 from them, the extended length ones they had....
Ive got a bunch around here (never had the 6" ones before though) if I could only find anything in the abyss called my garage. probably have duplicates of the same style bits I got from Fastenal at least.....
all that I have are the "double cut" style/
got the bug to try and improve the ports on a slant 6 head if I can do so without ruination.

3 for $60 for good carbides is cheap.

really? Don't seem like it. though I have had some crappy ones before, too long ago to remember what brand they were or how much Id paid... the cutting "tits" broke off, and the bit "burnt up" ,much like drill bits do, threw those away too long ago to remember. I don't need/buy these everyday and IDK who is "good" or not, or really what life expectancy I should be anticipating from them but that Snap on is definitely overpriced due to their "ego"
IDK what to reasonably expect to pay for "good" ones I want best bang for buck.
The 6" ones I got from Benchmark are... SH-2L paid $10.99 SF-3L paid 11.19 SB-3L $12,49 and SD-1L for $8.79. plus a few packs of air saw blades (which were on sale) to boot.... we'll see how good they wind up being.
Ill have to go out to my truck and get the receipt to tell which ones I got from Fastenal, though those are std length.
IO did get 4 from them but they gave me 1 free because "it didn't come up on their system" so that diluted the $60 down to a better price, still seemed high to me at an avg of $15/ea among the 4. but the 3 I paid for avg out to $20/ea. I don't like to pay big money just so I can brag about having bought "X-brand" anything. but I like what I DO buy to work for me as expected. I have an HF store by me that I browse 3-4 times a year but usually walk out of empty handed. What I have gotten there has not done as expected and ends up in the trash in short order around here. I don't like throwing money away, and buying "cheap tools" for the sake of being cheap is the best way to do so. But I don't like paying Snapon prices either. I just bought a set of Phillips screwdrivers for home off the S/) truck a few weeks ago because I suddenly find myself with no Phillips at home and what I do have just slips/cams out under the least of pressure....what I had here, is/was a hodge podge of brands I didn't like paying $100 for that set of ~6 or 7 screwdrivers either. but they grab and they work.

McMaster Carr

Mcmaster.com

Nice quality burrs, good prices.
Picked up 3 long and 4 short ones for iron.
Worked excellent for porting.
For longer shank burrs I reduced rpms if it starts to wobble.

Kim...check link in post #5 or there should be similar info at McMaster.com

Thanks Mike. Kim
check out that "Benchmark Abrasives" and compare to Mc Master.
I haven't been able to get back to the project that prompted this post, crazy busy with other crap.... I got burrs from Fastenal and long ones from this Benchmark place, plus a few Snap on ones I have had for a while and a few who knows where they came from.... but before the ones from Fastenal and benchmark I had several of just a couple of varieties of them... and all short versions. I'm neck deep into trying my hand at porting a slant 6 head, I have wrecked 1 seat for sure, hopefully going with o/s valves will allow for that. will probably have to have inserts put in by the time all is said and done.

I got all my carbide bit at swap meets, they are usually $1-5 a piece and the guys has tons in all shapes and sizes. Not sure if they are old Boeing stock that the guy lifts (local C-17 production here) or what but they have worked so far. Many could be HSS but I may not know the difference. Someone told me to put wax on the AL used bits to keep them from loading up?
