I'm pulling pistons out of a 400. Everything looking great until I remove a rod bearing to inspect the cap. Need some expertise on what is happening here.

It looks like the rods were not resized the last time it was put together to me.

They plated the oversized rods to get them back in spec, seen whole rods that were copper. See the cross hatch hone marks> That's good to go.

I didn't know about the plating, but that's good news. The cross hatch does look good. Thanks!

I believe when the weight was off a bit the factory would copper plate the rods to bring them to spec. I have seen many sets like that.

Was not an issue with the weight, the bore size was too big or out of round.
Im just saying what I heard a long time ago. Wouldnt copper be too soft to decrease bore size? Why would the whole rod get plated?

In plating copper sticks to steel really well. The over size or out of round condition is in the thousands, so the plating is very thin. Try peeling the copper plate off a penny, or bite into a penny, you will get the feel for how well copper sticks to steel and how hard a thin copper plate is.
The whole rod is coated to get uniform build up, that is how electrolysis works.
