Was the bearing snug in the cap and in the rod ?? Or was the bearing really easy to takeout ??
They plated the oversized rods to get them back in spec, seen whole rods that were copper. See the cross hatch hone marks> That's good to go.

Was not an issue with the weight, the bore size was too big or out of round.I believe when the weight was off a bit the factory would copper plate the rods to bring them to spec. I have seen many sets like that.

In plating copper sticks to steel really well. The over size or out of round condition is in the thousands, so the plating is very thin. Try peeling the copper plate off a penny, or bite into a penny, you will get the feel for how well copper sticks to steel and how hard a thin copper plate is.Im just saying what I heard a long time ago.
