Just looked at my Manuel. Do I have to lift my engine to change the oil pan gaskets? 74 Duster 225. thanks

If it's the same as a valiant then yes. On my valiant I had to unhook the steering center link and idle arm, and then loosen the mount bolts and lift the engine probably about 1&1/2 inches.

At the very least you'll have to loosen the motor mounts and lift it up to create clearance between the pan and the K-member. Be aware that it's a 4 piece gasket, so I think trying to do it with the engine still in the car won't give a good chance at a successful repair. I pulled my Slant to do the pan gasket. It really wasn't difficult to remove, but I'm sure it's doable with the engine still in the car, it's just not how I did it.

Wow, I thought I did one years ago without lifting the engine

I've not tried it in the car, but from what I know following a lot of slant stuff trying to do this inside the car it is a royal PITA. I have an 82 D150 with a spun timing chain. I'm going to pull it to fix that and any other issues.

Why would you even want to do this in the car? It's so much easier to get to on the stand. You can actually see what you're doing and get it right. How many bolts we talkin about? 20? Less?

Yea, I want to get it right. I think putting the pan up from underneath would be a pain, but better that pulling the whole motor out

You really think like that? Man, step out and really LOOK at your engine. Even with hand tools and no help, you could have it out in a hour by yourself. DO you change your own oil? I'll never understand why people try their best to make a job harder. Pulling an engine out of these old girls is slap easy. I'm old and tore up and can have mine out in thirty minutes.

Well you have to have a hoist. Which I don't have, and you would have to remove the Radiator, coolant, hoses, wiring connections ect. Hood removal. Way bigger Pain in the neck

You need a new Toyota.

I used to have a Toyota, and I could still teach you a thing or two RRR.

Oh of that I have no doubt. I have never once claimed to know it all......not narry a time.

If this becomes a straw pole, I vote for pulling the motor.

Get a neighbor to help pull the motor and do the pan gasket right. Working with the four part pan gasket up against that weird rear main and it's little rubber wings... I couldn't imagine doing that on my back and keeping everything clean and lined up.

I found a motor stand on CL for $40 and sniveled an engine hoist from a buddy.

It's easy too to pop the main caps and look for trouble while the motor is upside down. New mains and rod bearings in mine now, just because I could.

Good luck!

For what's it worth I changed my 66 Valiant in the street in front of my house because I was short on space. It is a pain but is doable by lifting the engine a few inches.

I just did mine on my back about a month ago underneath the car. Totally doable but a pain in the ***.
