Hi guys, I am a member that used to be pretty active. But sadly I sold my 65 Dart wagon a few years back. But I have an opportunity to get another A body at a great price. It’s a 68 Barracuda coup or notch back. I’m kind of concerned about the amount of work and cost. I just want a running project not concerned about looks or authenticity right now. It currently is in Northern California and I’m in So Cal. It has no drive train so I will need to get a motor and trans In it as soon As I can. I rent a house with only street parking and once Covid is over they will start enforcing street cleaning again and I will have to move it across the street once or twice a week. The car seems pretty solid only a little surface rust all the glass is there. It’s sitting on 4 sbp flat tires right now. I haven’t seen the car in person but my brother is in SF and has sent me a few pics which I’ll try to upload here. I like to work on these old cars but am by no means a mechanic. I also have to admit this is not my favorite body style. I prefer the fastback and convertibles of this car. But I love wagons more than anything. Just seeing what you guys think and maybe get some advice. Thanks. Tim

That doesn't look like a get it moving under it's own power in short order with only the street to work on it kind of project to me....

Maybe hold out for a project that runs and better fills the appetite, since you admit the notch is not a preferred body style of yours........just sayin.

A little more info on the deal. The car belongs to a friend of my brother’s Dad who has too many projects. My brother is willing to help them transport an old Range Rover Defender from the Midwest and they offered the Barracuda to him. My brother is planning to retire to Europe in the next few years and doesn’t want it really. So my circumstances aren’t optimal but if the price is only labor, and not even my labor, I really want to consider it. But I am afraid of it being to much for me. And I don’t want to just turn around and sell it because the Dad could do that himself. He wants to give It to someone who will really enjoy it.

I appreciate that. That’s why I’m so on the fence. The body style is growing on me though.

Trying to figure out the easiest way to get it mobile. I have no preferences on motor or transmission. It looks like an auto console car. But I would be perfectly happy to toss a slant auto in it for the time being. Or anything else that I can afford right now

Why waste your time and money on a coupe when you prefer wagons?? Wagons are too cool, coupes are an everyday thing!!

Would it be a sin to cut the top off to make it a non convertible? Would that even work structurally?

Welcome back! Sweet car! That is probably my favorite a body I absolutely love barracudas in all three configurations!

It is definitely a 69 coupe, look at the rectangular side markers. I'd say grab it, get it running & start building it as you want.

I wouldent cut the top off. That will ruin it. If you try to sell it later on as a "permavertible" you will have a hard time. Notchbacks were the lightest and stiffest of all 3 body styles of the second gen cars. The verts had a lot done to them to stiffen em up and were still kinda floppy. I have 2 notchbacks. A 67 and a 69. If your getting it cheap thats a steal.

Rent a 10x20 storage unit with electric. Instant shop. I used to rent a T hangar on the regional airport. One 20A breaker. When I ran my 25 gallon craftsman compressor I shut the shop lights off. Cost was $100 per month. But that was years ago.

Again great info, on the ridgedity of the car. Not worried as much about resale but don’t want to ruin it. Did that once with my first car. Cut the roof off of my $400 68 Fury wagon. It didn’t sag enough to mess with the doors fitting or anything and having a topless car with 3 rows of seats was fun but still regret doing that to it. I was a whole lot younger then, and believe it or not even more stupid than I am now. Would love another one of those today.

I’ll look into the price of the store unit. Tell my wife it will make more space around the house too
