Need some help from my head machining buddies

John, the bits are usually in the $30-45 range, depending on what it is.

Buy the bit with the profile you want, and bring it with your heads to the shop...... and say, “use this”.
 
Goodson and Silver Seal both sell the cutters with the multiple angles, and there are a BUNCH of different ones to choose from
 
You would just need to verify with the shop you use that they do in fact have the tooling to use that style of cutter.

That type of tooling is fairly universal these days....... but not “everyone” has it.
 
One of my customers used to have a speed shop/machine shop.
He sold it off probably 12-15 years ago.
He kept a small group of his circle track customers that he still does motors for, and he brings me the heads for the guide and seat work for those jobs.
There is often a little discussion about what angles he wants, and what chamber or bowl cuts that may be needed, etc.

If you’re looking to have something done a certain way, don’t assume the guy at the machine shop is a mind reader....... have the talk and discuss it.

Look at the 50 degree cutters while your looking around.


Having so many sets of Edelbrock and now a set of Speedmaster heads laying around I like the ability to interchange parts from head to head. Once I start going away from “standard” valve angles I lose that. Standard angles have been pretty good to me over the years.
 
Often times with those cutters that have multiple angles above the seat...... there isn’t enough radial clearance in the chamber before the cutter OD starts carving out the chamber wall.

Sometimes that’s a problem...... sometimes it’s not.

Also, many heads will require sinking the valve a fair amount to be able to utilize all the angles.

Sometimes that causes issues on the top side of the head with regards to tip heights and installed heights.

It can turn into a “be careful what you wish for” scenario.

It’s playing with that type of thing where having access to your own machine really comes in handy.

Don’t ask me why but the piss poor small block Edelbrock type head chamber likes to be sunk a little to slide a 15 degree top cut on it. It’s worth at least 6-8 cfm. My thinking is it raises the airflow up off the chamber floor and avoids crashing into the almost vertical back wall.
 
The deshrouding cutter I commonly use has a °15 bottom angle to it. My "go to" performance intake profile is °35 x .080" top °45 x .040" seat °65 x .100" bottom.

First off thanks for suggesting Silver Seal. I requested a book as suggested and received it yesterday, great service. I called Goodson today to see if tooling was still available and undateable and he said yes. Looks like for a few hundred dollars in tooling and 175-200.00 for a phase inverter I cut be grinding seats. I told my buddy 2000.00 for the machine plus new tooling was more than I wanted to spend so he said he could drop it to 1500.00 but since he is going south it won’t be available till around May which is fine with me. That gives me more time to think things over. I sold a head and block cutter for him to another friend of ours for 2500.00.
 
I’m getting the itch to buy something to improve my head seat valve angle machining. My buddy has he’s pretty sure a Peterson seat and guide machine. He hasn’t used it in over well over 10 plus years probably closer to 20 as he closed his shop. I honestly can’t remember what it even looks like but I know it has an air operated float table. Now if I would buy something like this can it be set up to do like 70-60-45-30-15 degree seats or 55 if I bought the cutters? He’s looking for around 2000.00 with tooling. He also had a mill but that would be to big for me. Thanks for any help.

I just sold my Peterson TCM-25 with the better fixture and all tooling and manuals for it. It’s a great machine and you should be able to cut whatever you want. Only real issue is the spindle rpms are preset (gear selection) not fully adjustable like more modern stuff. Also the table floats vs the head but on most old stuff that’s fine.
IMO $2k is a lot if it’s been dormant all this time.
