318 cylinder head upgrade

I'm not selling anything? Don't understand your statement it is incoherent Please educate us all.
Your arguement to run a 302 chamber is incoherent. Do you run split fire spark plugs, slick50, a turbine wheel on your ram intake as well? I'm not gonna argue the science of which you speak, but I've never seen a gnats ball hair be split in such fashion before. Ive seen and contributed to many hair splitting contests... I'm taken back by your aero science precision with this gnats ball hair. Bravo.
Do gnats hp show up on our dynos too? like..is there a formula to convert from gnat micro ..to real world? Tia.
273 head is just as efficient. So is a quench head piston. Gnats ball hairs.

Earlier combustion pushes back against piston coming up (counter productive) This is the reason why new engines combustion chambers burn faster than their ancestors. 302 head was an early example.
fast burn heads were developed to help emissions not to make more power! but a better burn is a better burn....

gnat balls sound sexy.

I used “O” heads on my 318. They came off a ‘73 340. I had 2.02 intakes installed, took .050” off the deck surface and .040” off the intake surface, and used an 1128G Mr Gasket head gasket. Chamber volume after milling was down to 58cc. Gained a full point of compression. Car has gone a best of 13.6 @99 with a very inexperienced driver (me) rowing the 4 speed.

Does anyone know why the 302 castings are prone to cracking? And are there any castings w/ hardened seats prior to 302 in '85?

Very curious as to what the OP is using as a "one step up" cam in a 318 since that subject has been discussed ad nauseum with no clearly explained recommendation.

discussed ad nauseum

LOL I like that Yes there are dozens of threads about 318 cams. There would be a more direct answer it there weren't so many choices. It seems that everyone has tried a different cam and says it works with no real comparison to any other. That's all ok. What ever works for you might not be what I want or what works for me. Yes, "one step above stock" is a generic term and there's no magic cam or magic number that fits the description.

The OP should be more specific about what cam he actually has. A "one step above stock" cam in a 318 could be a stock 360 2v cam

Which isn't a bad cam for a teen if you need to replace it while you're in there. It's not enough different to change it on purpose.

It also indicates that the mixture is lean at time of ignition. There's a difference between quantity and quality of mixture but when the engine is viewed as an "Air Pump"
that discussion is pointless here. Its easier to just change parts and discuss what part is better and why than to actually think about what the part actually changed in the engine.

People are saying that basing the decision on that one point is weak, thats all.
There are plenty of better flowing closed chamber heads to choose from to be pushing 302 castings so hard.
His point is factual, yet common knowledge..but airflow will trump that in the end...so no one is cheering him on. It's like many other arguements on here...unnecessary and overly focused on merely a benifical feature that doesn't float to boat on its own.

But To each his own.

Airflow has nothing to do with why an engine wants more or less timing.

Oh I know why an engine can want more or less timing.
You should re read what I said, or do you what I said and that's why you didnt quote me back after directly addressed what you said...but... it can influence cylinder pressure, huh, so what's that again Hysteric ?

And where do I find all these 318 small port closed chamber heads? Are you hoarding a huge stash of 273 heads in your chicken coop? 302 heads are fairly easy to come by and offer advantages. I have owned no less than 12 cars with 318's and the 2 I have have now using 302 heads run the best overall and on 87 octane (real daily drivers) WTF do you drive everyday? or can you even move your 400lb *** off the couch? I would like to try Magnum heads on 318's but more $$ to set up may as well just start with a 5.2 or 5.9 then.

Haha both of your feathers are ruffled... over 302 heads...smh
Ladies and gentlemen...i proudly present to you...The bozo brothers....Hesticle and 66jimbob.

12 cars...and all 318's. That's a brag alright.
Jimbob, look unknown character behind a keyboard...I dont give a **** what you drive. It doesnt make you more knowledgeable or dumber. You bringing it up is a sure sign of losing an arguement though. If you dont believe that filling a cylinder more by increased port flow can raise the cylinder pressure...then you don't have as much understanding of engines as you think.
As for Hysticle , he showed up ready to pounce on anyone not saying nice things about 302 heads he himself runs. It reminds of when I was so immature I'd argue to death a j head over a magnum head. 'The j head flows more ported' lol by a lot..but to each his own....maybe we can dig up and beat the dust out of that horse while we're on a roll here ..bet hesticle would like that. I offer to everybody here... go and look at all the posts he's made here.
What's his motive and intention...ahhhhhh ha. He is a return pot stirrer. He has been here before doing the same.
In all seriousness..I had a couple 318 cars, great drivers.
I've been running 340's for 20 yrs or so though, bb and slants before. Nothing wrong with a 318s. We all like the same ****, we just do it differently, remember that. Facts are facts, dont try and blur the truth just cause you fancy them. That 302 chamber works better modified btw, it's a shrouded pos.
I have 2 sets good and one set bad. I can pin the bad set. I wont be using any of them.
I will port them, do a multi angle valve job..and sell then to guys like you, and others...who are good people. I get about 800 or so for a set done up. ALL 318 INTAKE PORTS ARE DECENT AND TAKE LITTLE WORK TO ALL DO ABOUT THE SAME CFM @.500.
Food for thought...I have helped with an engine that was a refresh of used parts..needed 2 piston that were found off ebay...2 pistons that yielded about a full point of compression LESS as it turned out.. but that's what we had this round ...the difference on the dyno was 1.2hp!!!!!!!!!
I really dont think you know what the hell you are talking about and now by the end of this post..its actually irritating how arrogant and stubborn you two are. Tell me how you can feel a couple hp again....

You dont tell us what you drive, so why would I tell you what I drive?
You could be driving 12 ice cream trucks with 318s.
