View attachment 1715618228 View attachment 1715618230 My uncle sent me this book a long time ago and never really knew him or my dads side of the family.
Just started re reading the book and my grand father died in a coal mine cave in before I was born.
Grandma got remarried and have a bunch of relatives I've never met.
Going to have to visit Glencoe Wyoming sometime soon.
My dad's family worked in the coal mines in Northern England. My dad worked there one day and said "That's not for me". So he got into the butcher trade.
My grandfather got hit in the head with a steel beam and died. The company said he had a aneurysm so they wouldn't have to pay out any money to grandma. Lucky dad's brother worked in the mines as well or she would have lost her home because the mining company owned the house. This is before unions of course.
We went into a mine at Beamish which is a mining museum in Northern England. The working conditions were deplorable.

Be a good thing to learn more about your family history.
My wife is on Ancestry.com and she's traced both of our sides but to the 14 century.
Her side was in charge of Bamburgh Castle in the U.K. for 14 generations. We went through the castle last time were there. It was very interesting. She saw pictures of her ancestors hanging on the wall. Maybe some of them were hanging on the gallows also lol.

Wholey chit it’s cold all of a sudden supposed to go to -7 tonight, chance of friggin SNOW omg ! Then next week back to double digits you all have a great weekend stay safe keep you stick on the ice . Cheers
I agree Biff. It was gorgeous here yesterday 23 with a 28 humidex. Then a storm rolled in with warnings of tornados. FOG got rain, hail and high winds same as my son did but we just got rain and wife said it wasn't that heavy. I was downstairs watching tv with headphones on so never heard a thing

I wouldn't want to work in a coal mine ether your dad did a smart move.

Don't mind the cold just hate snow..
Just hate to have to bundle up all the time and freezing your butt off. Used to do that in the gravel pits putting glass in machinery. They wouldn't do it before the cold set in but generally in a snowstorm. A real treat cutting during a storm. Having to put gas on the cut and setting it on fire to warm the vinyl to be able to cut it. Couldn't wear gloves most of the time. The fire felt good lol. One guy used to much gas and burned his van to the ground lol Whoops!!!
Depression and anxiety hit me this time of year and that's when the guts give me problems. Should go to the Islands for 6 months.

Yea that would suck mostly not having gloves on.
Lucky me worked inside most the time and never had to install glass in the cold.
Would imagine you would have to hurry before the gasket froze up.

This is the Beamish Mine Museum we were at in 2011. The miners had a board they would lay on as there was water running though the mine. They would have to swing the pick and then shovel out the coal. The each had a oil lamp (used to be a candle which they had to pay for) and each lamp has a number on it. At the end of shift the lamps were put on the rack and if one was missing then they would search for the guy in case of a cave in.

I bet there was a lot of coal dust in the caves and they didn't have a good mask.
