Short Shaft Fan Clutch

any updates on this? i am getting ready to purchase the 2947 but looks like some different ideas on the fan itself? AbodyJoe did you try the dorman? what didnt you like about the 17117? MOpowers any issues since you have been running that 17117 fan? thanks!

I have the clutch. Seems to work. So short it's hard to get the bolts in. I got frustrated after a long day and my son got then in for me.

Forget what fan I used. I'd have to look it up when home.

Thing I noticed about some of the fans is some have cu in limits and some have low rpm limits.

I've since changed out the Derale 17117 with a factory fan blade from a late model Camaro. The 17117 wasn't pulling enough air through the radiator at idle. The Camaro fan is lighter (5-blade instead of 6 and the blades are aluminum), so I'm guessing the clutch is spinning it faster. Plus the new one has more pitch. Either way, I've got more airflow at low speeds, which is what I needed.

The Chevy part number is 14034027. I don't believe they are being repopped. Here's the NOS one I picked up off ebay for $45:

I bought it thinking it was 17.5" in diameter. When it arrived, I measured it at 18-1/8". I had to widen a couple holes on my radiator mounts and shroud mounts to move them over enough to clear the shroud, but it does, barely.
 
Very interested in the 2947 clutch plus the 5 blade fan. After installing my 400+ HP 360 (just guessing) I had cooling issues. Installed a Griffin aluminum rad and the issues vanished. After putting the cuda on the back burner for sometime now I've started back tinkering with it again. Never got around to fully completing the fan and shroud combo. Right now my fan is a steel non flex 6 blade with no clutch. At one point I had a vicious fan package but I couldn't mount it because the clutch was really close to rad. Sent it back for refund.
After seeing a fan shootout video that compared how different type fans rob horsepower it showed my current set up robs a shade over 30 horsepower. Yep... 30 horsepower. To me that's a ton of HP because of the fan. A standard clutch type robbed something like 14 HP.

I purchased the 2947 fan clutch and it is about 1/2" from the Griffin radiator. It's close but I think it should be alright. I will find out I guess.:eek:
Still waiting on the fan. It should be here today. FAN
I went with this fan since it is like the vicious fan Mopar offers. I "think" it moves more air.
 
yeah i have about the same 1/2 inch with a stock radiator on my 2947 in my 65. I bought a 18 fan but it was too big and was going to rub on my radiator at the top so i ended up buying a 17117 it fits great. Just finishing up my 340 swap so i dont have any miles on it yet but all is good at idle.
 
Does this fan look like the blades are turned right? This FAN fits most Dakotas with a 5.9 engine. The fan has "front" stamped on it and that is faced towards the front of the car.
I just installed the 2947 clutch/fan and the temperatures have sky rocketed!
What I did have was a constant meshed steel fan and the temps stayed around 195º but now the temps are right at 210º.
I pulled over and popped the hood so the engine would cool down and then brought it home. After it cooled down ... when I got back out on the road... the engine spit and sputtered ... like it was vapor locking. After cool fuel got to the carb I didn't have that problem any longer. None of this ever happened with the other fan!

Not the right fan! That's for a counter-clockwise rotation. Did you notice which way the air was blowing when it was running?

I put my hand between the fan and engine and I can feel air blowing on the engine but can't honestly tell you that it is blowing enough. I guess I will put my old fan back on and see if there is a difference in air movement. This fan is for all V8 engines in Dakotas and Durangos 5.7 , 4.7 , 5.9 ... ?????

Well guys and gals I ordered a 17117 fan from Summit. If I'm not happy with it I will return it and find a different fan since mopowers didn't like it. I do have a large electric fan in front of the radiator in which cuts on and off at will. The electric fan moves a large amount of air. Thought about using it between the rad and engine. Just do away with the mechanical fan but something tells me not do that. Abodyjoe said his E-fan gave out on him. That would be just my luck and I wouldn't notice it until it until the engine over heated. lol

The mistake I made is I noticed rumbles post about a 5 blade fan and ordered that one. I looked everywhere to find out if the fan is clockwise or counter but never could find any info on it. Seeing that it fits a 5.9 I went ahead and ordered it. I thought the set up would be like Mopar vicious fan package with 5 blades(more air). However this is a fan for Magnum engines in which are counter clockwise. Just letting anyone know that is interested in this fan .... it will not work!
 
Just FYI O'Reilly Auto has the short shaft clutch listed as MTC 2947. Only $12! Had to order it, but with shipping was less than $20. When I got it it said Hayden 2947 on the box. Lots cheaper than $60 to $80 every where else.
 
Well Summit gave me full refund on the fan even though I had mounted and used it.

I told them they need to add the rotation to their description of the fan so the confusion will be eliminated. He took down every thing I explained so they will add the info to the description of the fan.

OK.... on the 17117 there these tabs that will not allow the fan to go down on the fan clutch. I will have to grind them off. So if anyone interested in that fan just beware.
 
Just thought I would add this to the mix.
Short Fan Clutch 2 5/8" tall, had this on the shelf here for a couple years, may still be available through Advance now ?

Here is what I purchased. The Haden 2947 Mopar short shaft HD fan clutch and Derale 17117 standard rotation 17” fan. I’m going to have to grind the inside tabs of the fan to make it work, but that is hot rodding.

The stock fan is the 7 blade unit that came on my ‘67 273 when I purchased it. The Derale is within an 1/8” of the stock fan (best I can tell). The blade pitch is deeper. Here are the pictures and some ruff measurements.

I’m looking forward to getting it installed, freeing up some horsepower and hopefully it will eliminate by v-belt squeaking.

Depending on where you are with your build, with a small block, if you go with a '69 water pump, you can pick up another 3/4" space. But you need to change radiator.

Cold Case MOP 756A Radiator
195 ° stat. #370-195. FlowKooler
1 1/8" to 1 1/4 fan to radiator clearance
On 418 sm block
No issues so far

Hey bob...nice work...what is the open ended hose on the drivers side of the fan housing used for. Also, what do the holes in the fan Shroud look like under the black rubber flaps.

The holes under the flaps were an experiment for hi way cooling , didnt help , sealed off now .
the hose was for forcing air to the header area, seemed to help some with the valve cover gasket problem I had , headers were burning the gaskets up =raised port heads , make that problem worse , found better gaskets and took the tubes off. ---"car is a rolling experiment !"
