UTG -The Mighty 318

I had watched that. I agree with most of what he said.... Glad somebody is out there working with 318's and giving them a shout... after all, 318's will run :D

Stroke a 318 and get 390. Stroke a 360 and get a 408. Not a big difference there. LOL

  • Good point he made is the 318 is very close to dimensions as the beloved 5.3 LS, yet most look past the 318
  • One thing (and most disagree with me) is I'm a little quicker to pull the trigger on putting 360 heads on a 318. The times I've done it (cutting the heads .040), I've always had noticeable seat-of-the-pants gains

Key statement. (cutting the heads .040)

The LS has decades better design then the 318, just like the Gen III Hemi.

No doubt the 318 is one of the best engines to come out of Detroit but the technology in the new engines is hard to beat.

No doubt! Cross bolted mains and the LS heads make it what it is. Roller cam too.

It'd help if the aftermarket would introduce a newer port design head and intake manifold package. Look at what the westlake heads did for the 318.

If you are going to compare an LS to a 318 then why stop there? In other words I don't get the relevance

I don't think UTG's point was how "tough" and how much HP the stock block can handle. I think it was bore to bore, stroke to stroke, the 5.2 and 5.3 are very close. Folks LS 5.3 swap, but without turbos or major upgrades, they don't perform exceptionally well but people are happy about it. So why not the 318 if big HP isn't the goal... I think that was UTG's point

No comparison between a 318 and a LS. Just like a Gen 3.
Right. I beat a LS 5.3 in stock form easily with my 318 Duster... wasn't even a race!!! :D :D

It was my friends Chevy truck 1500 with a factory 5.3  .... LOL

Years ago at the time it was cheaper to do the 410 Stroker then the 390. There was so much out there for doing a 360 there was more expensive to buy the 318 Pistons to do a stroker. When my machine shop offered me a 360 block for a hundred and fifty bucks it became a no-brainer at that time to get the extra 20 cubic inches for basically less... "At the time".. I haven't done any research as of late on the subject though...

IMO, the 318 is just a fine platform to build a hot rod engine from. I’ll go for as much cylinder bore I can, that’s just a “Me” thing. But what any engine needs, no matter what the displacement is, is a great intake track from the carb, to the intake to the cylinder heads.

some of the info above is incorrect . Like the blocks have different coolant and are not near as strong. Here are two side by side. The difference is very noticable with just one of the sides pictured . 273 318 are the same block picture next to a 340. And the only 360 I would even concider using for a race motor is 71-72- 360 dash 1-4

The only problem with the 318 there’s a ton of cheap 360 out there to build.

Good video. ....he bugs me the way he talks.....but good video!

Last night I was looking at YouTube videos and one came up in the column from some guy that was REALLY pissed at Tony. He cussed and ranted on and on about how Tony screwed over some guy named "LambChop", how Tony is a worthless hack that only lives to sell T shirts and pencils, how he can't build cars, blah blah....This guy looked like some disgruntled toothless drunk.

And you can compare modern engines, the main advancements allow performance and low speed driveability eg.. OD, Multiple displacements, variable timing. None of those allow more power than what we hot rodders can do just we got to compromise more. New LS and Hemi are great cause there heads flow as much as race engines stock which just leaves cam change to get the power out of them, but throw on similar heads on 273/318/340/360 and you can make the same power.

Dang skippy!
That’s what I was saying before.

Such as a W2 headed, solid roller 318. I'd like to see that in a N/A race against a 5.3.

Ok, so fill me in. How did UT screw over lamb chop? Also, evidently the guy has never heard of startling line ratio. A close ratio gear box isn’t always a good thing.
This guy is far from a expert too. He's just pissy that he only has 222 subscribers and Uncle Tony has 168,000. :poke::poke:
