1/4 mile times with 3.23 gear

-
Several years ago I was at the drag strip and saw a 68 Dart go 6.00 with some insane mph in the 1/8. It didn't leave very hard but flying in the back half. I made my way through the pits and talked to the owner, the car had a 588" aluminum big block with Indy heads, 3.23 gears, it ran on pump gas and was driven to the track. Just looking at the car you'd expect mid-high 7's, no roll bar, stock length rear with 275 MT radials. Very impressive car.
ZOWZIERS! I thought you were gonna say small block and twin turbos. No replacement for displacement!

NICE! something that could be built in anyones backyard.

It was too. I built that before I had a metal building put up at the old house in Macon. It was on an engine stand just outside the fence under a blue tarp. lol

68 Dart with a 440 - 727 trans and 3:23 gear. 11.40s in the 1/4.

That looks like a great cam for my 360.... seriously considering

Considering that I also ran a 600 Eddie and a lowly Performer manifold not the RPM and only 9.6 -1 comp it certainly should go quicker in its next incarnation.

Oh and I almost forgot.....ported 318 heads

Was a long time ago but I had a 70 Challenger with a 440 the went 12.4's at Bandimere Speedway, elev. 5800, with 3.23's.
I went 16.7 at Bandimere with my Barracuda back in the early 90's with 3.23's and a fairly stock 318....MAN that thing was slow, but I thought it was fast back then, lol!

What is the quickest time you have seen or done with a 3.23 equipped car/truck? A little detail about your combination would be great. Went 13.18 at 108 with 68 340 with LD340 with 3310,1-3/4" headers and DC .484 hyd cam in a 69 Dart,4-speed and 27"slicks. Next time around will be 25.5-26" slicks...will use the 27" tires for the highway.
12.41, 71 Demon mild 340, 727 9 1/2" dynamic converter (4500 stall) 275/50R15 Mickey Thomson ET Streets 8 3/4 3:23.

I had some video of my Challenger but it's on VHS! I remember watching the videos and my buddy and I both agreed that it was pulling at least the left front wheel off the ground....JUST a smiggen. Was hard to tell though.

I accidently left in second gear many years ago. 1.45 2nd x 4.10 rear equals 5.9 slr. A 2.45 first x 3.23 is 8 slr, much better!
33 inch x15 slicks, 535 stroker, 5000 stall.
I had dialed 10.40 but fell off to 10.60 et. 3400 lb race weight. So you can see torque and high stall speed really help.
IMHO a great combo would be 2.74 low, 3.23 rear, biggest shortblock you can afford, and a high stall lockup converter of at least 3200 rpm

the Mopar Performance News magazine did an article about that exact problem. their thought was to make the engine work harder but use less rpm. kinda like the 53 Studebaker with a 500 inch Caddy engine. I don't believe it rev'd over 5500 but was consistent 11's...at least that's what I remember.

70 Dart, all stock body, full interior, 8.5 comp 360, bored .040, crappy smogger heads, cam was .444/.467, stock Chrysler electronic ignition, Edelbrock air gap intake and 750 Performer carb, TTi headers and full 3 inch exhaust through to the bumper, stock 727 w/stock convertor, subframe connectors welded in, adjustable pinion snubber, 8.75 with 3.23 gears and a Truetrac diff, 245/60 R15 BFG drag radials, weighed around 3750 with me in the seat, ran consistent 13.80s with a best of 13.78 ~ 100 mph, shifting at 5500 rpm. If I ran it on the street tires, Cooper Cobra 235/60 R14s, it would go 14.0

what lifters are you running with this cam? Also, what converter?

Just generic hydraulic lifters cant remember where they are from. Converter is currently a Turbo Action 3800 and I had a cheaper locally made 3200 stall in it earlier and they both stall around 3200.

With that said my 60ft is 1.853 and your is 1.863 so with your crane cam your building good cylinder pressure and making good torque at the start.

I'm thinking of ordering that cam for my 360 (I already have it in my summit cart..LOL). My SM heads are begging for more cam. I'm going to up my gears (2.94's are nice on the highway, though) a little, and shed the stock converter for a better one.

What comp will you be running?

That cam cruises nicely at 2000 rpm doing about 30-40 mpr with a small TQ and pulls about 14 inches of vacuum at idle.

I'm leaving the engine alone, I'll just be swapping cams in the car. Goal is to just bump up the cam, converter, and gears some (not a lot) to keep the street manners in tact but get the ET down a bit and MPH up.
