Does someone have a diagram of the correct spare tire install for a 1972 A body/Demon? Is just the jack base used in the center hole to hold down the wheel and tire or is there a round disc that goes under the wing nut? Thanks

Hi, I dig up this thread, but where is your jack hook?

On the period Dodge trunk sticker, it's successively from bottom to top : the spare tire (valve stem down), the hook, the base and the wing nut.

Other problem : my spare tire seems to be too large for the wheel well depth (205/70R14).
It protudes from the trunk floor.
What's the max spare tire width compatible?

And my last question : are these parts original?
A black painted metal cup with a central hole and a cardboard wheel cover.

Thank you,

Nobody?

I saw that original and standard Demon tires were 6.45X14", so I plan to install a 175/80R14 on my spare wheel.
This way, I hope that the spare tire will be flush with the trunk floor and that I'll be able to install the cardboard wheel cover.

A 175/80R14 tire has the same outer diameter than my 205/70R14 tires.
So I think that it could be a narrower but compatible "space saver" spare tire as we can find one on all modern cars, no?

What do you think about?

My 72 Demon has a different base-plate for the jack, because of his swiss origin.

But my 71 Duster has the same cardboard (with hole) and also the black metal cup - it is missing on the picture above, it is mounted between the wing-nut and the jack-base - to fix it better.

Hello Marvin

What's the spare tire size in your Duster?

For the black metal cup, I found another theory on a french forum : installed in the spare wheel hole (and under the jack hook), the metal cup helps the stud to be centered.

:thankyou: for your answer...
Francois

My spare tire is a 205/70/14 on a 5,5 wheel - too big (or too high) - You can see....
Original was a 185/70/14 on a 4,5 wheel in the trunk - this combination makes a flat floor.

It doesn't mind for me, but have a round cardboard - not like Yours.

For the black metal cup, I found another theory on a french forum : installed in the spare wheel hole (and under the jack hook), the metal cup helps the stud to be centered.

This sounds nice - and I tried it, but it doesn't work - because of the form of the holder - the fixing metal part/slot in the trunk.
But it fits exactly on/in the base of the jack.

Thank you very much Marvin for your time, taking the pictures and descriptions.
I noticed that your spare tire isn't installed in the right manner : it must be upside down (the valve stem facing down)
This way, you will get more lenght on the stud and space to install the jack hook.

I will have a try tomorrow with a bare wheel rim :
Wheel + metal cup + jack hook + jack base + wing nut.
I'll take some pictures.

Francois

PS : excuse me for my poor english...

Interesting - but in my cars the spare tire was always mounted this way - otherwise Yiou cannot check the tire-pressure without taking the tire out of the trunk.
And this is something You should do at least once a year.
I have in both cars long studs - about 2 inches longer as in A-Bodies in the 60s - with a short stud, You can only mount it the way You told.
The hook is stored with the jack.

And here You can see how the Swiss have handled the storage of the jack:

I only relate the Dodge prescription about the jack storage and the spare wheel.

Here's my jack (sorry for the bad picture, I will take a better one tomorrow)

Is your jack bag original or is it an accessory?

The bag is a Swiss original - only found in Swiss Demons.

I know this mounting instruction - but I‘m not sure if it is for Duster/Demons also.
The different length of the studs seems to confirm this.

It's for Demons also.
My '71 Demon still have the original sticker in the trunk lid.
I will measure my stud.

Thank you Johnny and in theory, it's the method recommended by Chrysler.
But in fact, the stud is too short (16cm) and it's impossible to overlap all the parts.
I tried in several ways, but it's impossible.

I finally tried like that :
Spare00.jpg

The wheel well

Spare0.jpg

A bare steel rim (all my other wheels have too much wide tires to make a test), upside down.
The stud is loose.

spare1.jpg

With the metal cup installed, the stud is centered.

Spare2.jpg

The only way to position the jack hook (not over the stud..!)

Spare3.jpg

The jack base, upside down, presses down the hook.

Spare4.jpg

The wing nut.

Spare5.jpg

The cardboard.

Spare6.jpg

The trunk mat.

In my opinion, this is the only way to store the wheel, hook and base in the wheel well and to obtain a flush cardboard on the trunk floor.

There are different length hold down bolts.
You don't want the jack hook rattling/bouncing around in your spare tire.

Bottom up

  1. Spare tire
  2. Jack Base
  3. Jack Hook (forgot, not used on the Barracuda)
  4. Large wing nut
  5. Large hardboard panel (floor)
  6. Large cup washer
  7. Small wing nut.

Thank you,
Francois

1972 Did not use a "jack hook" The jack itself goes into slots in the bumper.
