I just paid a shop $600 to rebuild my 4 speed. I have been working on the car doing other things while the shop had it. Got the trans back in and it will not go into reverse. All other gears are working. Cannot even move the lever with it not connected to the shifter. Hoping for a little advice. Had the car running on jack stands and was able to see that the clutch is working and the trans shifts into all the gears fine, By tightening and loosening the nut which holds the reverse linkage in place ther is some movement of the lever but in both positions the car is still in neutral. Help???

Not saying this is what it is but there is a slight adjustment on the reverse lockout by moving the side cover. There was a Mopar training slide show posted just yesterday that showed the lockout. Let me see if I can find it. Here it is. Very informative. I think the cover adjustment is toward the end of the vid.

Holy crap.....I called the shop this morning that rebuilt my trans and the owner was stumped. He was asking me if I tried this and that and I was like of course. I'm not a dumbass......Anyways I watch the video about 3 or 4 times and during my lunch break since I am still working from home I got under the car. Drained my new gear oil and loosened the side cover bolts. Put my adjustable wrench on the reverse selector and it moves freely now and goes into reverse. I tightened down the side cover slowly and in a crossing pattern tested reverse after every bolt and its fixed. So happy I don't have to get a tow or take the trans back out. The shop said he would call me back which he hasn't yet. Thanks a lot of the info Mike. Saved me. Stay safe and healthy.

There are a lot of mechanics out there that say "sure I can rebuild your 4 speed" but they often don't know the subtle details and differences between the 4 speed designs. You would at least hoped that they had a FSM for reference.
I would be wondering if there are any more potential problems that may show up later.

Good to hear! I thought may-be it was the side cover. That training video/slide show might be old school but it taught me a lot. Rock on!

Only time will tell. The guy who actually rebuilt it called me back saying he bench tests everything and he didn't know what couldv've happened. He said the 833 is a very simple transmission to put together. He did say the clearance of reverse mechanism and the side cover is very tight and maybe due to the gasket being thin caused it. Just a guess on his part I think. I'm satisfied for now.

Yeah I learned a lot from that old school video myself. Thanks again.

for information, that is listed in a factory service manual. I found that out back in 1970. lol

Yep, it in my 71 chassis manual, it’s also cool watching the old service videos like Mike posted. I had the same issue back last spring when I got my 833 back from a old school guy in Portland that has only built 4 speed for the last 40 years. He was unaware of the side case shift to free up reverse until I showed him the book and the video. I just un-torqued and kept bolts tight, tapped the side case up and it fixed it.

I've run into this with every 833 I've ever had the sidecover off. When shifting the cover didn't work, I've resorted to grinding either the 1-2 shift lever or the reverse lever. I've never worried about it as the TSM indicates at one time there were two offerings for the 1-2 lever to offer selective fitting.
