Edelbrock—Layoffs

-
It would be foolish to say that electric powered vehicles are not part of the future, and it would be foolish to say that internal combustion engines (as well as the fuel it takes to run them) will be 100% replaced in our lifetime by electric.
Sure, the technology is moving forward at a very rapid pace, but in say even 20 years, the total elimination of fossil fuel powered anything in the world is just a fantasy for some people to cling on to.
The Arabs will have something to say about that!
Unless we get ahold of some alien technology to replace gas engines in cars, fly aircraft, and heat homes economically,
it will take many generations to replace what we have now.
The world is a HUGE place, and many countries simply cannot afford the ''new'' technology even if it is perceived as ''better''.
My point is:
It would take a long time to change things globally is all I'm saying, so people don't need to worry about anything for many years about gasoline powered engines going away overnight sometime soon.
Let's be realistic........

Yep, Edelbrock is done with Kommifornia and anyone who doesn't want to leave that paradise and relocate to Tennessee is SOL...
What I was going to say, another run off from sunny Californication

Funny you mention the cost of cigarettes. As a kid my dad would send me to the gas station to buy his cigarettes. I remember then at a15 cents a pack. Then 20,then 25. My dad said the day a quarter won’t buy a pack that he would quit! Well hey went to 30 cents. I went back and told my dad and he said that’s it I quit. And he did never smoked again.

i think in the case it’s more about combining like manufacturing and job. Efficiency in scale.

IMHO, if Edelbrock was in Texas IOP would have moved them.... or vice versa.

guess what, MSD WAS in Texas and they are now in TN under the Comp umbrella from when another previous private investor firm merged/bought them with COMP.

Obviously your dad was a man of character and principle. Can’t say that about many today, and the nation is all the worse for it.

I had the same conviction. I just set the bar a little higher. When I did smoke. I would say the day $10.00 won’t buy a pack. I quit! Well it took double pneumonia and 20 days in the hospital. But I quit after 38 years in January 2013.

And Al Gore said in his book in 1992 that the internal combustion engine would be banned by the year 2017! That’s the problem of making a prediction in your lifetime. When it doesn’t happen, you look like a bigger fool than you already are.

well, there's a big difference between what Al Gore said in 1992 and what's happening in 2021. Europe has already passed environmental rules that essentially outlaw combustion engines for vehicles by 2030 and GM's announcement that they will quit selling IC passenger cars in 2035 is a "sea change" in the auto industry. i would not be surprised if 2021 is the last year for the Camaro given its very anemic sales. if the Camaro does survive, it will be as a hybrid or all electric just like where Ford has gone with the Mustang Mach-E. Chrysler is the last major U.S. auto manufacturer that is still holding onto "muscle car" purchase options for their customers. in fact, Chrysler could be considered "insane" with what they are doing. you can get a 500 horsepower Jeep Grand Cherokee; a big hemi Durango; three different Hemi's in the RAM's; three different Hemi's in the Challengers; two Hemi's in the Charger. Chrysler hasn't even issued a press release as to a new "electric" sports car from them. and Chrysler isn't stupid - they are following THE MONEY. electric and hybrid vehicles only represent a little over 2 % of all new vehicles sold. AND the Challenger is outselling the Camaro close to two to one. a LARGE segment of Americans still want IC performance vehicles and Mopar knows that and is giving "the market what it wants." trouble is - INSANE IDIOTS are now in charge of the U.S. Government and they have shown time and again that they don't give one crap about what "Americans" want.

There is a difference between stopping production of and outright banning of the internal combustion engine.

well, let me play "lawyer" for a moment.

the U.S. Constitution has a rule that the government can't pass a law making something illegal today that was "legal" yesterday. it's called the prohibition against "ex post facto" laws. that's why when Bill Clinton got the assault weapons ban passed in the mid-1990's, that law only outlawed the "future manufacture and sales" of the weapons covered in the law. the law did NOT make it illegal to own any of the listed firearms if you owned them "before" the law passed.

it will be the same for internal combustion vehicles. assuming we still have our Constitution by 2035. if General Motors says it will stop "manufacturing" IC passenger cars by the 2035 model year, that will NOT make any prior GM vehicles illegal to own or operate. it just means GM will not be producing any new IC vehicles. so you are 100% correct. stopping production does not mean a BAN on IC vehicles. but obviously when the U.S. moves into the world of "electric only new vehicles" the pressure and screws on IC vehicles will mount.

Constitution matters ???

Constitution matters ???

LOL! i don't know if the U.S. Constitution "matters" much these days. i could go into a LONG speech about specific examples in the law and politics where it appears a lot of people believe the Constitution is just a "dusty old document" and nothing more. but i won't - this is a "car" website.

the relevant point for FABO members is that whatever car you're driving or working on right now, enjoy it and drive the hell out of it because as we all know, nothing last forever and even if our cars remain "legal" to own and drive, there might be "carbon taxes" or other "fees" that will be assessed against them.

oil fills ALL pockets - Republicans, Democrats, Russians, Arabians, and the rest of the world. It stands alone as the world economic super power. It's not going anywhere. Now, will they find ways to make us pay more?? Sure...

Well what your saying sounds like common sense. But then I thought common sense would not allow a past president to be impeached????

I'm just going to enjoy the fact that somehow, some way, there are a few more people not paying taxes in California, which just tighten's the noose around the state of California's governmental financial nuts just a little bit tighter.

That's the only way to really to stop the madness, is to allow the bullshit to catch up with 'em.

Looks like Chrysler have begun to make some statements about their future direction!!
Dodge warns that the V8's days are numbered

So how will an 850 mile trip up in an electric car to see family work? Currently we leave home fully gassed and drive about 65-75 mph the whole way there, stop 3-4 times to gas up, take a leak, maybe grab a hot bite and arrive approximately 12 hours later. What would doing it via electric entail, and when would I theoretically arrive? Recharge in 1-5- 10-15 minutes and roll? How many times will I need to stop? And I haven’t spent more than $17000 on any new (or next to new) vehicle (last were in 2009 and 2020) I will not spend much more than that in the future, ever, on any newer vehicle. Can I get one of the new wizzbang electric cars for less than that you think? So anyway, everywhere we may go we Pull right up and magically there’s a recharge station open for me? What a bunch of BS nonsense.

It will all be like cell towers, there will be one every 10 miles!!!! Ha

I don't need gas or diesel...... my rigs run on fairy dust and unicorn piss!!!

So that the US has achieved oil independence, what will we do with it all after the electric car takes over??? Someone make a home AC unit that runs on diesel?????

the answer to your question about where will all the oil go is probably this: the U.S. will use diesel and natural gas to generate electricity at the majority of power plants for the next 50 years. "renewable" energy - solar, wind, geothermal accounted for about 11% of all U.S. electric production in 2019. unless there is some "major breakthrough" in physics regarding these sources of energy, renewables will not replace fossil fuel electric generation for decades. however, that does not mean transportation vehicles of all types will not transition to electric. they will. the question that no one has answered yet - especially the insane NUTS running California - is this: right now, only about 2% of all new vehicles are hybrid-electric or total electric. that means 98% of all new vehicles are still internal combustion vehicles. how will you be able to add 98% more vehicles to the "electric grid" and still maintain sufficient electric for residential and industrial use?

1974, smoking those long Salem’s, went into the 7-11 to buy a pack. Man said 34 cents, went up 4 cents in one day, told him to put em back on the rack, haven’t smoked one since.

I haven’t had one yet. But I still get the cravings for one 8 years later!

Commiefornia and the rest of the tree huggers can pass all the laws they like about electric vehicles. They can't keep the power on now during the summer months at peak demand, so what the hell do they think is going to happen when 30 million charging stations get attached to the grid?

Let's watch the political slam's here. This thread can be deleted easily or sent to N&P.
