1969 Dodge Dart Swinger clean up

-
LOL, I watched the shadow get smaller pretty closely. Figured it made the most sense to test the lift with the car that's insured for the highest agreed value. I have a tape line on the lift now and the Bee will be taking it's place if the sun comes out tomorrow.
Well if height under the lift is a concern it's probably the worst car to put on the lift. I guess it's a wash if it has to live on either side....

The wing looks awful close to the Roof.
NAH...

38 Days to make it here from what amounts to a border bridge and a 5 hour drive, but they finally made it. Thanks Frank @Mr. Sinister. Frank's rear axle stops have the matching mounting plate to what I took off and Eddie's have the matching bumpers, so a clean up and mix and match and I have just what I need. Thanks guys!

Which ones are "new?"

Decided to forgo cutting a hole in the ceiling for now. The Bee is prettier to look up her skirt anyhow! Now I have some room to tear that Swinger's rear axle assembly apart.

Holey blankety blank! That's absurd. Gives a whole new meaning to how long it takes to do things on a car. You have to have the patience of a saint...

It was USPS.. taking a month to get stuff to the border. Now we have an entire main sorting facility at Canada Post with the majority of the 3000 workers with Covid or off for 14 day quarantine

Same here. At least a month to get parts via USPS i have had a bunch of parts at Blue Water Shipping in Port Huron since Sept. Fulfillment Guys were bringing the parts across the border, but ran into some snag with Canada Customs, who are in no hurry to resolve the issue!

Now I have some room to work safely. Engine ready for it's mounts and installation to the K frame assembly.

Yep,,, just shooting pictures while I clean up the shop today. Tomorrow I'll get some actual work done. This mornings grocery run is out of the way and we're good for at least a month this round.

Wonder Woman's car just about ready to go...

Sugestion....
Add a heavy vinyl curtain floor to ceiling to protect those beauties on the lift.

Last weekend I split a piece of cast iron off of a clamp (long story) and a piece flew accros the garage and hit the garage door. Luckily missed the Dart.

You may also want to protect the top car from uv from fluorescent shop lights. (Real thing, most don't think about)

One thing (of many) that I can't stand is cotter pins that are quickly installed, like a pretzel, that snag rags and cut your hands/arms when working on things. On these short repro castle nuts that leave the pin hole high I bend the head down a bit.
1969dartcleanupweek9 050.JPG

Bent head sits nicely in the castle slot to do what it's supposed to do, stop the nut from loosening.
1969dartcleanupweek9 052.JPG

Clip the short tail, leaving just enough to bend over the nut.
1969dartcleanupweek9 045.JPG

Long tail, I bend about 3/16" of the tip first, then bring it over the bolt end.
1969dartcleanupweek9 057.JPG

Then use a punch to set the end down behind the cotter's head.
1969dartcleanupweek9 058.JPG

..and it's snag free and looks neat.
1969dartcleanupweek9 059.JPG

52 year old rubber axle bump stops left in AV100LL for the night and the undercoating and mess just slipped off. Rubber also softened up, so don't leave them soaking for too long.
1969dartcleanupweek9 067.JPG

Mounts installed to the engine and engine/transmission being lowered onto the K frame assembly.
1969dartcleanupweek9 091.JPG

K frame checked for level/reference.
1969dartcleanupweek9 094.JPG

Carb mounting flange used to make sure that the engine is bolted down identical to the K frame level reference.
1969dartcleanupweek9 095.JPG

All in the details. Engine boss touched up where the lifting chain was bolted on, leaving a bare spot front and back of the boss that would have started the rust machine.
1969dartcleanupweek9 101.JPG

Another shot of the adjustable roller rockers and beehive valve springs. Rockers have CC on them, identifying them as Competition Cams units. Later versions that are bushed.
1969dartcleanupweek9 103.JPG

I used $$$ cover gaskets on my Bee and they didn't seal worth a sh.. ! Back to old school cork and no sealant. It's what came off this thing and they weren't leaking, so why tempt fate!?
1969dartcleanupweek9 106.JPG

Just lightly snugged up so they can slowly take a set to seal.
1969dartcleanupweek9 108.JPG

Why I take lots of pictures. Just makes life easy when there's a 50/50 chance you get it right.
1969dartcleanupweek9 113.JPG

I also marked the distributors base location so I don't have to play with timing this thing.
1969dartcleanupweek9 114.JPG

Covers on, spark plugs in, distributor and coil back in place, as well as the breather and plug wire looms.
1969dartcleanupweek9 115.JPG

Don't forget some sealant on the alternator bracket/water pump housing bolts. They are in the wet passage.
1969dartcleanupweek9 117.JPG

When putting the fan assembly on, spin it and check the fan and pulley for wobble. Just like tracking an airplane propeller you can control the belt pulley wobble pending which of the 4 bolts you snug first.
1969dartcleanupweek9 118.JPG

Just the transmission lines, distributor cap/wires, carburetor and trans kick down cable left to go and it's ready to put back in the car. Oh yah and those damn headers...

A real pia but well worth the effort, those blasted short castle nuts and too high holes on joints, I've drilled new holes. Yea, real pia better have really good drill bits (emphasis on the plural...), cutting lube and go slow

What I should be doing is using some of my OE x 3 "turret" castle nut stash, but I'm saving those for a future OE restoration that may come along.

Transmission lines cleaned up, removing old paint overspray and other goo.
1969dartcleanupweek9 133.JPG

Fittings reinstalled into the transmission case with PST 592. I put this **** on everything and haven't had a fitting leak in over 25 years on aircraft, cars, oil furnaces....
1969dartcleanupweek9 134.JPG

Transmission lines back into place.
1969dartcleanupweek9 135.JPG

I keep staring at this intake and it's runners and wonder just how street-able this thing is gonna be...
1969dartcleanupweek9 137.JPG

Found this when putting the carb back on. Vacuum port blocker inside the distributor vacuum advance hose. Thought maybe the last mechanic left it there when setting base timing, so I made a call and they "think" the distributor was recurved to run mechanical advance only, without using the vacuum advance. Some pedal mashing in the future will confirm or deny that theory.
1969dartcleanupweek9 142.JPG

Lokar throttle kick down cable reinstalled from engine to transmission and adjusted for proper throw.
1969dartcleanupweek9 144.JPG

Just happened to have the exact length of date code PCV hose left over from doing my Bee restoration. Another 24 bucks into her...
1969dartcleanupweek9 148.JPG

New fuel line installed, with filter in a much better place than the pump inlet.
1969dartcleanupweek9 159.JPG

Tomorrow the task at hand is trying to clean up these neglected TTI headers.
