I was wondering how far is the heavy duty selector shaft seal suppose to go in? I just re-took out the new regular seal i installed a few months ago because it leaked. I got this new one from ebay and did a comparison. the ebay one is taller and more heavy duty. I installed it on the car today which was kinda hard putting that seal in with the transmission still on the car but i believe i successfully installed it. I used a large old C Clamp, a block of wood and i think a 15/16 socket tall enough to go over the shaft.

Now how far is it suppose to go? i know that its a taller seal than the original one and cant expect it to be flush with the transmission hole but this seal still has a couple of "millimeters" out. i ll post picks tomorrow

As of now this is where it sits at the moment. I tried to pressure it in more but i see that my tranny pan is getting bended (even with the block of wood in between) from the pressure so i back off. i cant hit the seal since its in a hard area of the car.

Any one installed a heavy duty seal to stop the transmission from leaking; if so how far does it go down?

I also changed the smaller rubber seal thats on top of the selector shaft seal. I just need a better E-clip cause the ones from auto zone keep getting wrapped with pressure as you push it in the groove

I dont wanna remove everything again just because i missed something.

You should be fine with the way it is, just make sure before connecting the linkage to the arms that everything moves freely with no binding or bending.

ok thanks for replying back. im already putting everything on as we speak just got a road block at the moment. something is wrong with my kickdown linkage, it wont go back and forth smoothly like it use to. it wont go back at all when i press the gas pedal / hell its preventing the gas pedal to travel (restricted). i gotta figure out what is being stuck/bind tomorrow... if not ill have to take the headers and intake off again to reach the kickdown shaft / tranny shaft.

The HD seal is installed at the right height. One pic shows your E-clip coming off the kd shaft. It probably popped all the way off when yopu pushed the kd arm onto it and it dropped down inside. That flat part of the kd shaft is supposed to be facing the driver side. It's facing forward in the pic. Remove clip; push down; turn counterclockwise 90 degrees; pull it back up and reinstall the clip. Make sure it's clocked right inside and moves the innards correctly. You'll be able to feel it; loose at first then pressing harder against a spring resistance as you push the arm back.

thank you, i did exactly as you said. i never knew there was a sweet spot for the kickdown shaft. It now has internal (spring-like) tension and everything mores smoothly. i installed everything back on the car and lowered it to the ground. so far so good. i see no leaks and its only been a day BUT i still have to start the car & warm it up but i cant at the moment because of a dead accelerator pump diaphragm from my holley 4bbl 6299-1 carburator, im waiting on Holley to ship out the replacement part.

That's it. It should be bottomed out there.

ok so its been a while since i updated this post, sorry been busy. I just want to say that the car hasn't leak any transmission fluid since i change the seal to the heavy duty tall version. they should just sell those instead of the smaller ones. i am very happy that i don't need to be under the car anymore.

so it was a : Mission Success!
