Anyone see the post on Facebook that the dude claims when changing to a 4 barrel intake and carb from a 2 barrel on a 318 the timing changes? Timing light shows under the engine. Everybody says he’s an idiot but he claims he did it on numerous 318s. You have to go read it.

Vacuum changes for sure..., that effects timing on the distributor.

Pretty tough to read it when we have no idea who/ what/ where/ when...............................................

Wish I had got a link, then I have to figure how to post it. Real nut job imo

Well maybe because the stock 5° btdc is so lame yeah you should re-time it but should've been done with the 2 barrel.

He probably pulled the distributor.:rofl::rofl:

But yes, anytime you change stuff you should check the basic tune up.

This is what can cause that to happen:
  • Going from port vacuum to manifold vacuum on the vacuum advance
  • Idling the car at a higher RPM pulling some timing in from the mechanical weights
  • Pulling the dizzy and not putting it back in the same spot (why pull the dizzy anyways??? lol)
Other than these three instances, initial timing will remain the same until it is changed.

Yeah I saw the post earlier today as well. I would take a screenshot and post it here but unfortunately he took it down. His claim was that when you switch a stock 2 bbl 318 to a 318 with 360 heads and a 4 bbl intake and carb WITHOUT touching the distributor, the time goes WAY off and the timing marks on the balanced are no longer accurate and a timing light can no longer be used to time the engine, it has to be done by ear. Claimed he’s seen it at least 6 or 7 different times over the years.

I wonder if his process includes messing with the cam timing?

He has probably changed the vacuum advance signal.

First problem is listening to Facebook. Every attention-seeking nut job has a phone and Facebook now. Best advice is to ignore and move on. Or, shout at a wall like the rest of his commenters on his thread.

Well that’s just it. He claimed he’s experienced this going back to the 80s or 90s.

Every time I install dual exhaust on a 318 my speedometer reads 11 mph off. I did it at least 13x in the last 15 years. I verified it GPS, and it shows 55 @ 55 mph, then after I install duals it shows 66 to do 55 mph. No other changes, Call me crazy if you want...

That’s essentially how the whole thing came across!

Although one thing left off the list. Imagining things....

A bunch of the FB posters ate WAY too many lead paint chips as a child & now days they need to step away from their crack/meth pipe.

I’m active on FB. The vast majority of respondents have no clue how cars work, regardless of the subject. You can’t educate everyone do sometimes it’s best to just don’t go down that rabbit hole...

The nice thing about fakebook is that you are not limited to only one dumb opinion...you get them all
