If you are using Moparmats diagram above, you don’t really need to bypass the amp meter, as it is no longer functional. You can just leave it hooked up.

I eliminated the leg of the wire from the cabin bulkhead fitting to welded splice and will feed the cabin from the starter relay back. Tomorrow we will tackle the rest of the mess.

and after you make a dozen repairs, you still have a 48 year old harness... for $270 you can get a complete factory correct harness from Year One (M&H) and put it back right. By the way, please don't drill through the connector, drill through the firewall and put in grommets to protect the wires. That's what Chrysler did for fleet vehicles with 60 amp alternators.

You can find rewire kits cheaper on ebay , specially if you go the standard G M kits , just have to change ends/plug ins to mopar .
I f I can do it , u can do it !! Didnt want 52 yr old wire in my toy .

I agree. Unless your going to EFI with the car, this is probably the best path.
Put a stock harness in and do a fleet wiring. You'll have to do a little repair and customizing due to damaged R6 wire on the dash side.
Or
Wire it like they wired the rear defroster grid cars. That factory option didn't use the R6 wire from the bulkhead connector.

Hmmmmmmmm. Dam electrical. I’ll look up M&H but I *THINK* Ive bought some stuff from them before.

I was hoping this would be a simple project. It’s now become a nightmare and if all goes well I’ll have a new project on Sunday.

If I do another car I think I will buy all the harnesses new up front so I will not have to fight the endless electrical gremlins with old wiring.

Get rid of the "cancer" and start with a fresh harness.
"Quality is remembered long after the cost is forgotten".
Don't be my dead father in law. Would spend $5.00 in gas to use a dollar off coupon.
The motto I posted in my shop for my Mechanics to follow," Do what you do, Don't do what you don't do."
In other words don't have the Tune-up guy doing brake jobs and vice versa.

M&H - you can contact them for technical questions, but they only sell through Year one and Summit Racing - so that's where to go to get a price

Do I need to come up there? lol

Electricity SUCKS and the clowns who design this stuff need a beating. Getting a handle on it now. What a giant PITA.

If you plumbed a house or something like these cars are wired we’d all be swimming in schitt.

I really have to disagree. These cars worked really well for decades. Nobody ever thought that we'd still be thrashing them 50 years later, or designed for it. Nobody had these problems in the 1980s and 1990s. Nobody bothers to maintain these systems over time. It's like complaining when an engine bites the dust and nobody ever changed the oil. Who takes apart all the connections, cleans and greases them, but listen to them wail when the resistance from corroded connections burns something up. The other big issue is installing equipment that puts loads on the system that it was never intended to support. Sorry but I don't buy it.

I would agree but I would also say the wiring/electrical in a general motors of the same vintage puts mopars to shame. Mopars have always been known for their wiring design and it wasn't because of how great it was lol. Now the body styles and engines are awesome, but don't get me started on the whole windshield gasket bs, pure stupidity.

I have to say I like the Mopar electrical system. It's easy to figure out and if "I" can do it, it has to be easy. Yeah, they have some short comings. I agree, if you go much more than what they came with stock in the electrical system, you probably oughtta pull that main wire out of the bulkhead connector and run it through the firewall. But that said, I like the amp gauge. Mine still works fine. All I have beyond stock is my stereo and it doesn't even have an external amp. The welded splice is still good. There's just no need to address anything right now. Maybe later.

He has a wiring mess. like rotten spaghetti. We're not talking a splice...he has a burnt, chopped up mess. I just wouldn't try to save a long dead horse..

I agree 100%. I wasn't talkin about his POS. I was talkin about a real car. Mine. lol

Dissagre on the gm being wired better, too many yrs on the dragstrip watching them do crazy elec. stuff , especially when a 4 speed , lights coming on , signal lights , brake lights , when changing gears , and non related , the dam camaros dumping gas all over the starting line when taking off . gas filler behind the tag.
Guess its why I hate them to this day !!

^^^^^^^^^^THIS^^^^^^^^^^^. And, the way the engineers wired the circuits is just retarded.

LOL...it’s not even my car. BUT>>>>my car has some nasty looking wires and I’m betting I’m going to have to do some of the same things to my car.

Luckily, I have MAGAMOPAR coming over and giving me a hand. His work is IMPECCABLE. And he’s dang good at it. And he’s a great guy. So a triple bonus.

Without him here I’d be swimming across Turtle Creek with both hands holding my ding-a-ling (Chuck Berry reference for all you youngins).
