I have limited experience using band type clamps for exhaust. I have a slip joint and have a standard U style clamp on it now. I need to lose the U clamp as it touches the cross member frame every once in a while. The band clamp would offer a lot more clearance. The mid pipe slips over the head pipe, so they have different outside diameters. Is this the correct type band clamp I need for this situation? It appears so from the description. Thank you drive through.

The ones that the tti kit came with work well. They don’t crimp the pipe which is real nice. Just tighten them up and you’d done is my experience.

I used the band clamps for the custom exhaust I built for my D100 project. Far superior to the old school clamps. Yes that looks similar what you need but, I have seen one with different sizes on each end. Craig

I have the same style band clamps on the exhaust on my 83 D150. They hold just fine. However as you may expect, over time the two sections of exhaust pipe inside the clamp become one and are near impossible to separate. I ran into this issue when I did a recent engine pull on the D150. I ended up cutting the exhaust pipes. On my next exhaust install I plan to use V Band clamps. The V band clamps require welding when installing but allow the pipes to be separated.
The V Band clamp shown in post 6 is what I plan to use.
If RRR does not have room for a standard exhaust clamp, he won’t have room for a V Band clamp, but if it was a new install I would use the V Band clamps.

How about this. On Amazon
LTI 2.5 Inch Lap Joint Exhaust Band Clamp Repair Preformed for 2.5" ID to 2.5" OD Exhaust Pipe Connection 304 Stainless Steel (2.5 Inch)

The V-Band clamps are the cats ***. Expensive but worth it in the long run. Im currently running stainless band clamps and they work 100 times better than the old smash your pipe clamps.

Guys, I REALLY appreciate the ideas here......but if a standard muffler clamp is touching the cross member every now and then, there's no way a V band clamp will fit. The clamp HAS to be located right in line with the cross member, where the pipe runs under it. It was a stupid place for TTI to put that joint, but that's where it is. I gotta have something FLAT like that band clamp I posted. I have one coming and will let yall know how it works. Thanks.

Rusty what you have listed should work fine for the OD pipe into the ID pipe. I used them at the muffler on my Demon and they seal and work good.

Thank you kindly! I was hoping someone who had used one would chime in and let me know I had the right thing. Thanks!

these type clamps work fine, been using them on 5 inch pipe on big trucks for decades, seals good nuff to keep dot happy as no leaks allowed on CMV's!! but, if ya ever take it apart sposed to put it back with another new clamp,..i/e not sosed be reused!

The only band clamps I have used, join similar sized pipes together (e.g. 2 1/2 OD to 2 1/2 OD.)

I can say they do seal excellently and they are ideal for tight spaces.

The clamp you linked seems to be an OD to OD clamp, as does the one @clementine linked, but if you can find one designed for an OD to ID situation, I'd run it without worry.

Thanks much for the feedback. If you read further down in the description, it is for ID to OD. I'm glad to find out they work well. Thank you!

I run these on my 65 Belvedere. From the headers to the mufflers to the tail pipes. As said above they should be replaced after one use. They have a stretch seal but I have reused them.

Putting some anti-seize on the connection will make life a lot easier if you ever need to separate the pipes.

This clamp is a 2.5" to 2.5" OD OD clamp. Since the topic starter has a slip fit situation, this clamp is not a good solution. If he were to cut off the expanded portion pipe, it might work but it also might create too large of a gap.

There are USA made versions and China made versions. The USA versions hold WAY better.

However, you still have a problem in that you already crimped the pipe when attaching the U style clamp. The band clamp will likely leak and may even allow for the pipes to separate because the Pipes are no longer round.

In order for these band clamps to work properly, both pipes need to be clean, round and still able to slip fit in and out.

If you're band clamping a lap joint, do you have to cut a couple slits in the overlapping tube so the clamp tightens it down more?

Only if it is the 1" style band clamp. The larger 3" band clamps that the topic starter was looking at, do not require the slots.

The overlapping pipe already has slits cut in it.

That would be ok if the pipes hadn't been compressed by the U clamp. To do it so it doesn't leak or loosen, you need to leave a U-clamp on there or you need to cut out that section and put in a new clean section. That would require welding or additional band clamps.

I have installed several TTI systems and I always weld the H where it connects after trimming it to the right length.
I have never slotted the tube when using band clamps. Never had an issue with sealing or holding in place. They also apart when you need them to.
