I know I'm right....
The stuff between the roof and the drip rail...is it a mastic, ie. squirted in and let set or is it a piece of tar strip? Mine is seperating from the roof leaving a nice crack. 65 Barracuda.
What's the drip rail seal called?

Paintable body seam sealer. 3M has it at your local auto body supply in what looks like a tooth paste tube,and in a caulking gun.
3M All Around Auto Body Seam Sealer
Small tube should work for your drip rails. It's a little spendy, but great product. Let cure 24 hrs before painting, although it says can paint in half hour. Like to let it cure good before painting over it.
Can smooth out real quick with a finger, but don't keep working it. Cleans up with enamel reducer.

So putting that stuff on a painted roof may damage the existing paint? I may just put a thin bead of clear RTV and press it into the crack to preserve the paint. Its a garaged car so I don't anticipate rain but I do wash it now and then.....maybe a little less water up there and a little more dust mopping.
All that crap is fifty year old technology. If you want something really GOOD, use Lord Fusor self leveling seam sealer. It requires a special gun to shoot it with, but it's worth it.

Agree with Post 4 & 7 . I too would wait 24 hours before paint. Sealer and or enamel reducer wont hurt your paint but don't leave a rag with reducer sitting on your paint or it could.
The seam sealer that is out there is light years better than what they were using 50 years ago. You still need to buy the good stuff, not the crap at advance auto. 3M makes really good seam sealer. Self leveling works great but not sure how well it would work on the drip edge....never tried it there.
Im pretty sure the stuff mopar used actually absorbs water. Kinda like the filler at the quarter panel seam.

It works good. Once you get it on an inclined surface, you can use a small high quality brush on it.
I like the 3m Ultrapro for most areas, but for exterior seams like drip rails I like this stuff. https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/p/d/b40071609/ 05887 EZ Sand. If your application is not as smooth and uniform as you like, it is easily sanded to make it pretty.

Don't use RTV silicone sealant. The acids in it will create more problems down the road.
Dig it all out or it will keep cracking. Spray some primer, sealer or what ever you have on any bare metal spots. Lay a nice bead of seam sealer. Use a small brush or your finger with a glove on & some paint thinner to smooth it out.

Its on a painted roof! What a shame.....I think it cracked when they used the infra red dryer after painting it...20 years ago.
