Anybody know why my oil light would come on when I brake hard? Oil level is good in the car. It is a 74 Duster with a 318.

I'd replace the sensor the for the oil light and see if the problen goes away before I made a big deal out of it.They do go bad

Dipstick is not correct for the car giving you an incorrect reading?

Do an oil change, add the correct oil amount plus the one for the filter. Then che k the level on the dipstick.

Another could be a leak in the pickup just under the full level, when you hit the breaks oil moves forward allowing the leak to suck air.

My 273 does this when I got close to 2 qt low, (I know it should never get that low, that's another story)

I agree in changing the sender my old sender would show low pressure when full and ideling, replaced it and no more issue

Put a manual gauge on it and drive it. This will tell you for sure if it's a problem. If the manual gauge does the same thing then you know the light isn't lying. Plus how many miles on the engine? It could be that the bearings are that worn and the idle is dropping to low. But the manual gauge will tell you the real oil pressure you have. Maybe a crack in the pickup tube. Is the bottom of the oil pan look dented or smashed?

No damage to the oil pan. And I just changed the oil and the correct amount of oil registered on the dipstick. The sensor did the same thing prior to the oil change.

Does it come on or flicker at idle? I would guess excessive bearing clearance or worn out oil pump. I agree with hooking up a mechanical gauge to diagnose. Thats the first thing I would do and should tell you if there is a real issue or not.

I bet a whole dollar there's sludge 1/2" deep or more in the bottom of the pan. When you brake hard, what "little" oil getting in the pickup rushes to the front of the pan and it sucks air cutting the light on.

Just put a piece of tape over the light and not worry about it.

Seriously, my first step would be to verify the actual pressure with a manual gauge first.
The other posts describe what to do next.
Good luck........

No sludge, I changed the oil pan gasket when I bought the car. It was leaking. The light doesnt flicker or even come on except right when I start it and if I brake hard. Thanks for all the help. I get a gauge on it and see what's up.

If it’s a stock pan and pickup the pickup MUST touch the bottom of the pan. If it doesn’t it will do what you are asking about.

Sounds like the best idea.

Sounds like pickup tube problem to me. Either it's not sitting flat next to the bottom, or, it's damaged, causing air to get sucked up instead of oil, on hard braking.

Only 9 to 11 lbs of oil pressure is req'd to turn the warning lamp off. A oil gauge may show you very low oil pressure at all times. Good luck with it.

Well, if you have very low oil pressure all the time then this is a problem for sure

How low does your idle go when you brake hard?
Some idle way down on hard braking.
This could cause the pressure to be low enough to trigger the light.
