Just picked up a 7 1/4” with a Dana clutch sure grip. Strange thing is it has a 3.90 ring and pinion. Was this very common?

Usually 3.55 gears on the 7 1/4 sure grip package in 63-65. I had a set. They also had funky bolts... they shouldered to the carrier holes and then to a smaller thread size than say a 1971 ring would have.I’d say it is rare. I’ve never seen that ratio in that size axle.
That has to be aftermarket.
Interesting piece though. I suspect that the SG would increase the durability of it
Well,I don't know about that, never opened one up. They were so abundant and cheap I just replaced them when I had a problem.I do know from the sales lit I have collected that they came with 323,355,and 390 ratios and offered as an option on any A body in the mid 60's .They were also part of the towing package that the wagons had and were more than likely offered in other models as well. And back in the day we as consumers could pretty much order anything we wanted from the dealer unlike today's take what we have on the lot mentality
Yes ,it seems that way.I have a '67 with the 7 1/4 SG. Interesting about the ratios. So the SG always had better ratio's than the peg leg 7 1/4?
