New Alternator To Avoid

Just posting to make anyone aware of a major shortcoming with some of these completely new alternators being offered from Rock Auto, typical local parts stores, Ebay etc being offered under various names. Obviously they are all from China.
This one by the name of WAI Global with a part# 7024N

first seems appealing as it’s listed as a 78 amp version. Isn’t cheap, but gave it a try as there would be a little more reserve amperage after adding up the amps of all the electric fans, pumps etc I was using.
Well, I decided to take it into a local old school alternator/starter rebuild shop to test its output (Box stores test equipment only show good/bad...no actual amperage readings) Turns out it put out a maximum of 45 amps!! That’s right at my combined load of all components I’m running. Have had it too long to send it back for a return now, but what a (shouldn’t have been surprised) letdown. Anyway, just something to be aware of when considering any of these versions, especially the 78 Amp version. Might luck out and get one that puts out what it’s supposed to, but......

$128 is not really cheap.
No it’s not as I mentioned, can’t remember what I paid all in exactly, but I should have checked it sooner and could have sent it back. Just A nice pricey 46 amp alternator for someone :rolleyes:

I bought one of these a few years ago and at the time I swear it was not putting out as advertised. my radio would power off at idle at a stop light there was not enough juice. I ran a wire form the alternator to the starter relay lug and ran the power for the radio to it as well . same thing would happen. When I turned on my a/c and the wipers it took 10 seconds for the wiper arm to sweep the windshield. i finally bought a power master alternator and all of a sudden all the power issues were solved.

Not sure what you’re getting at with “political stupidity” nobody said anything about that, this ain’t a post about China or for back and forth of or raising the ire of a defender crusader whatever. So, any new alternators are all made in China, as I said “obviously” it’s a given, knew that when I bought it. So is the new WAI Global oem style electronic distributor I’m running no problems.
 
Not sure, told them it was newer, working and supposed to be a 78 amp, they took it back into the shop and I could hear them run the machine hitting it with whatever load 3 times. They said all they got out of it was 45 amps. I’ve come across some listings of this model and it lists it as a 46, discovered after the fact.
 
I have had two rock auto alternators not work at all out of the box. They also will send you a single field alternator in a square back case which wouldn't give full range of adjustment on a poly motor I had. Points ignition. They do not tell you, they just send the square back.

I have had two rock auto alternators not work at all out of the box. They also will send you a single field alternator in a square back case which wouldn't give full range of adjustment on a poly motor I had. Points ignition. They do not tell you, they just send the square back.
I have one of those rockauto squarebacks. Single field. Have not tested it yet. I guess I probably ought to.
 
Later model Nippondenso out of a dodge van put out some amps. I picked one up awhile back for a build. Still on shelf. Think it was around 120-130 amps. You can get a v-groove pulley for a few bucks if it's got a serpentine.

That’s what I thought maybe you were getting at. Cant refute that, wouldn’t either. Anyway, All I wanted was a powerful enough alternator and was let down by this underperforming piece.

If you ever go to the shop again ask
a) at what voltage ?
b) at what rpm ?
If they look at you like you have four eyes, its not worth arguing over. It is something they ought to know and will make a difference in the max amperage as that varies with both.

However the bottom line is the fact that you (12many) were sold something that doesn't work as advertised. See if you can get your money back.

7024 is a "Lester number" used by many aftermarket places as sortof an industry standard.
WAI Global owns Transpo, a MAJOR supplier of alternator and starter repair parts. :( Their stuff ends up in a lot of rebuilt and repaired alternators and your experience on confirms my impression that the quality is not there. :(

I don't recommend using revised squarebacks because the rotors draw more power than the regular squarebacks. It has been my experience that additional current may be more than the regulators made for the earlier alternators can handle. The other issue is that with increased current draw, any resistance in the path to the regulator causes a greater votlage drop. I can't prove the first, but the second is definately so.

Some good info, thanks. The only reason I went with this “all new” alternator was it showed as being a 78 amp. I have about a calculated combined load of 45 amps and figured the 78 rating for my van would be about right where I needed to be without resorting to 100 amp+ versions. I had a 100 amp upgraded early style (had the big diodes etc) version years ago for a big stereo system but the alt failed so went back to the 60 amp standards and eased up on the sound system (this was prior to electric pumps, fans etc where the load was much lower) Now I need the increased amperage, more so down low for in town etc with that 45 amp load. Just gonna have to bite the bullet and upgrade to something else, and rework/modify brackets and whatever needed rewiring.
 
If you can find a different brand, it may the '78 amp' revised squareback will do the job.
I'd look into finding the matching regulator. It sounds like you've done other rewiring to handle the additional loads.

Have you seen the test data that Nacho got with a rebuilt '78 amp' alt? I've reposted it here. You could use that to see roughly the max power output at various engine rpms if you know the pulley ratio.

It’s more a mishmash wiring situation. Battery, charging circuit, ignition, gauges and fans, fuel pump wiring is all new, large gauge wire, proper grounds, fuses, circuit breakers etc and so forth mixed with the old existing wiring for lighting. I’ll look up the posts you mention, and the pulleys I have are a set of CVF billet with (iirc) larger crank pulley combined for a slightly overdriven water pump and alt. Can’t recall ratios, just that it’s spinning the alt and wp a little faster
 
Buying a rebuilt or "new" is a total crap shoot anymore.
Used swap meet or junkyard parts are probably better.

I found a local guy who rebuilds (and tests!) alternators and starters.
For about 100 bucks I got my original upgraded alternator rebuilt and it looks like new! He upped the amperage a little at my request though I have no added on electric loads.
I'd recommend doing the same.
