Hello guys

My '71 Demon doesn't have its original radiator anymore, but a brand new aftermarket one.
Cooling is just fine.

I have the opportunity to buy an original but used 26" rad (#34434970), seemingly for '71 318/340. Isn't it too much large for a 198ci, causing too much cooling?
Would the cooling liquid reach 180°?

Thank you in advance
François

The opening on the core support is only 22 inches. Not sure what you would do with a 26 inch Radiator?

3443970 radiator was not used on the 1971 demon. That radiator was used on the Barracuda and the Challenger.

@72Dart6pack :Core support is only 22 inches wide on Demon? Oh, yes... I should have checked the width before asking my question

@townsend : E-bodies affectation only isn't a major problem. This 3443970 rad is year matching and original. But indeed, a too large width can be a major problem :D

Thanks

I once owned a 71 Valiant 4 door with a 225. What was interesting was everything was heavy duty - 8.75 with 3.23 SG, V8 torsion bars, 8.75 with 3.23 SG, and it had a 26 inch radiator.

Back story on it - I bought it from the original owner who special ordered it so he could tow his trailer! I asked him Why a slant. He said for the mileage when he wasn’t using it to tow.

Also the radiator hose placement is different between v8 and /6

No never too much cooling!

The thermostat will keep the engine at temp.

The advantage is as long as you have a proper fan setup you could sit in traffic in AZ in the middle of summer and never overheat.

Only the upper one. The lower one is in the same location.
My aftemarket rad ( a Spectra Premium) is for a small block V8 and I only had to reroute the upper hose.

Today, I measured my Spectra Premium rad. It's 26" wide.
Even if the opening is only 22", at least my rad would be an original Mopar... and it comes with the fan shroud for a very decent price.

The opening for the fan in the shroud may not be in the correct location.

I see you are in France so I get it that you are limited to the availability of parts, but spending good money on parts that may not fit correctly seem a waste.

Put up a wanted add, someone may have everything you need to complete your resto and be willing to ship it to you

(by the way the engine compartment looks awesome)

Using the fan shroud or not isn't very important as Slant six rads don't have a fan shroud (my aftermarket rad doesn't have one)
On the other hand, the rad itself seems to be in a good shape.
I can get it for $100.00
Just need a good checking by a professional and an upper tank paint job.

I have an A-body 26” radiator fan shroud for sale if you need one.

Are you anywhere near Valence? We have another member with a blue Duster who lives near there.

Thank you. I will check the rad and shroud compatibility as soon as I will receive them.
If needed, I'll be back to you

I could use a fan shroud BUT from Cali to New Brunswick Canada the shipping would be more than the price of the shroud.

My apologies guys! I just saw that I mis-typed. It is not a shroud that I have. I have a 26” radiator core support.

I dont like using used radiators, too many bad experiences
Source an American made direct fit replacement, you will be better off in the long run. Stay away from the off shore junk.

Silly that people think a 26" wide radiator won't cool better just because the opening is 22" wide. The air doesn't have to go in a straight path. More surface area will allow more cooling. You may not need one in France, unless in the south. The radiator in my 1969 Dart slant boiled over several times and it had I think a larger radiator since factory AC. That was in Georgia, which rarely gets >95 F, so >110 F in CA/AZ would be worse. But, the problem was usually coolant loss from a split in the seam in the front middle. That plagued the earlier round-top radiators (my 1965 Newport split there too), but I think wasn't an issue in the later square-top type you show.

How big the opening is has little bearing on cooling. The water in the radiator is moving, so it's all going to see air flow. The bigger the radiator, the better. The core doesn't have to all be exposed for the radiator to work correctly.
