Ok, all you super genius guys, I gotta get my spring out with the pedal assembly installed in the car.
The new clutch requires that I remove it.
Is there a really easy way, or should I just cut the S.O.B.?
Fact is that I've got a really bad hernia, and don't have surgery until 7/22, so I'm a little bit physically impaired right now.
REALLY appreciate any help I can get.

If you can get some brake spring pliers in there, that'll do it.

if I recall someone said something like depress the pedal then put washers between the coils or something of that nature it sounded like a pretty good idea to me. Just keep your mouth closed and safety glasses on.

I've seen that done, but its really difficult with the pedal assembly still installed. I thought I'd see if anyone has a better idea.
 
Im telling you, im not a bit afraid to cut it. This has gotta happen in the next 4 days, because Saturday is when I'm going to have help putting it back together.
 
The old lady is wanting her garage back, and recovery from surgery is gonna be a month.
 
I have driven a few cars pals own with the clutch types that require that spring be removed.

They wanted a second opinion.....

Mine agreed with theirs, they suck.

Can you return it and get an OE type?

I would.

I'll get Dan Brewers opinion. Not doubting you a bit, but I've got nerve damage to my left knee.
Already traded in my 5 speed truck for an auto. Hate to give up shifting the dart also.
 
Now that I've thought about it (for 2 minutes), you're probably right. Maybe I'll drive to Ohio tomorrow.
 
I ordered a new setup for one of my cars from Brewers about a month ago, picked it up at Carlisle.

I did mention that I wanted the stock type that keeps the spring & I went with Dan's recommendation.

Since you have a bad knee.... the cars I drove with the alleged 'newer is better, just buy it and remove your spring' setup required a LOT more leg power.

Odd release / engage points too, PITA to drive overall.
 
Also.... I have nerve damage in both knees, but the test drives I mentioned occurred before that when I had healthy knees.

Driving those cars with the modified clutch setup still sucked.
 
You keep the spring with the old 3 finger borg warner clutch.
F**k that noise, get with the times, lose the spring and get a diaphragm clutch. Works like butter, without that weird feeling the spring gives. Night and day difference. Good luck !!!

If you read what he posted, that's what he has and why he wants to remove the spring.

large washer trick works if you can find enough of them. Install them with the pedal all the way out. When press the pedal in with washers in place, it should give you enough play to remove it

I may be wrong but I did the washer thing. If you disconnect the rod at the pedal then push it will go to the floor and stay there (I think lol) then stuff it full of washers and pull it back ? it's been a while but I did it by myself .My memory sucks ! lol
 
Not that I've ever needed to, but I believe you would want the pedal at center where the spring would be extended furthest to insert washers. Then all the way to the floor to remove the spring from the pins.
 
Now I remember. I tapped a screw driver between a coil then slid in a washer and removed screw driver and repeated until I got it off.Probably around 8- 10 washers ?
 
Yeah I’ve never had to remove the spring while the pedals were in the car. But done it several times when pedals were out to rebuild them. By the way, i found a easy way to reinstall it. Use a floor jack hook the spring on the front axle, hook the other end on the bar below the plate. Jack the handle until the coils are apart to slip several thick washers in the coils, release the jack spring will stay extended, now install the spring on the pedals and start removing the washers with vise grips until they are all removed.

This How to Install Overcenter Clutch Spring in the Car

I took my bucket seat out for comfort to back and knees.
 
I didn’t have washers, so ran a bunch of short drywall screws in instead. Anything to keep the spring stretched out will work
 
I disconnect the clutch linkage from the pedal, then remove the "C" clip on the brake pedal side that keeps the clutch pedal from sliding out. Then slide the clutch pedal out enough to clear the pedal stop, lift the pedal up and the spring will come right out. push the pedal back down, slide it back inplace, put the clip back on, hook up the clutch linkage and done, or you can do the same to put the spring on.
