LEGAL ADVISE

-
That only happens when they intercourse with me directly (as you know from FaceBook yesterday). Knowing what to do and how to word it to get proper attention and the result you want came with the territory of my prior career.
That about sums it up

this does not need to be in writing, a verbal contract is a legally binding contract
he gave you the money you said he owed you and left with his prize, at that exact moment it was said and done
he can argue, disagree and even threaten to sue you, but once he speaks to a lawyer, he will blow away like a fart in the wind
again, once he paid you the contract was completed, his only recourse is to take you to court and PROVE you were negligent
if I may ask, how much money are we talking about?
and no I'm not a lawyer but I know the scenario
He wants $7,000

What was the color scheme? Curious
It took a lot of time Even though i didnt like it i thought it turned out nice 3 coats of clear sanded it with 600 then 3 more coats

looks good to me
id let you paint my car (not in that color scheme, but still)

The reason i ask is because ive been down this road minus the the lawyers. You should have first chance to fix any issue and if not then id see about letting a shop fix it and pay them. No way in hell would i be giving him money back. That is shady af on his end

You got a lawyer, a terrorist, and a used car salesman. And a gun with only 2 bullets. What do you do?

In case you don't know it costs $5000 to cover a good lawyers retainer. Judging from your pic there is not $5000 in damages. I think he is blowing smoke and trying to bluff you. If you feel like it, offer him a reduced price to repaint it. It will cost him less than taking it to another shop. BTW look like a quality job on a poor choice of colors. JMO.

Im curious what are his exact complaints. Im assuming he told you
First the headliner was all wrong & has some wrinkles in it & it needed to be replaced. I told him that in time they would come out. All the rubber seals were falling off & needed to be replaced. Ive done many cars with the same name brand & never had a problem. I broke the LT door window, it rolls up & down hard. Has anyone ever put new window felt & seals on ? I told him things would be a little tight. A paint chip or some thing on the LT side lower fender. The rear window seal is wrong. I have used the same one on other builds. The LT rear wheel well paint has a wrinkle in it. Sent me some pictures of other things but ill be dammed if i can see any thing wrong. Just sent me pictures didnt say what was wrong. Here is the kicker i did alot of things on it for free. Just thought i was helping another mopar guy out. That will never happen again lol

one good stroke deserves another, tell him you've changed your mind and you'll agree to nothing sight unseen, he needs to bring the car to you
yes you effed up doing extra work and that can be an issue but again, he accepted the car and paid you, I bet he wasn't bitching about the "freebies" then! Don't let this sour you to helping a Mopar brother out.
now I have to ask, was there an actual written and signed contract or was it man to man handshake with agreed job and price? I ask because if it's in black and white then you may have a problem with specifics, you overstepped in one instance and possibly under delivered in the other and he may be able to get you on that. If handshake agreed then the scope of understanding can be argued because what you thought he meant and what he thought you meant can easily be misconstrued.
I get it that you want to protect your reputation and do the right thing but there are a million ways for customers to eff you over, no way would I give him $7000. Any money you give him is paramount to admitting fault so just nix that idea, you've offered to fix what he isn't happy with, that is different than admitting you effed up.
I will say it again, he needs to bring the car to you.

That’s kind of vague. If the headliner was contracted-fix it or pay. We’re seals contracted? If you used the wrong ones that’s on you. If you broke something-you need to fix or pay. Did you think that doing some extra would make up for problems? That’s on you. I don’t know you or him but if he has to pay to get it fixed then you need to man up to the problems and pay or fix. If he has to bring it back then you need to reimburse him for his time and money. It sounds like you knew things were not 100%.

Headliner to me looks like just may need a steaming and restretch. No biggie imo. The things you named sound like all minor things. Easily addressed. Yes it will take some time and money but not the amount he wants. Idk seems very like a bad scenario no matter how the outcome. The sad part is you tried to help out and be fair and now this is a sour situation. This is why im very picky about what body and paint work i do for people.

your right you dont know me if you did you would know what you just said is wrong i give you a handful of people that know that i have took money out of my own pocket to do a car over because I wasnt happy with it. I wouldve done the same with him. I was happy with it he was happy with it his wife was happy with it he paid me & went on his way. Like i said i have done this kind of work on & off for 30 plus years inbetween my day job. I know what seals & rubbers to use. Just to name a few

Ok but the new seals you installed are falling out? You broke a drivers side window?
And headliner is all wrong?
Or did I read it wrong?

All I know is what you said-I haven’t heard the other side, but I’m sure there is one. I have bought-owned-built a bunch of cars too. If this car didn’t turn out the way it should have just take your lumps do your best to make it right. A mans name is all he has. I will be the first to say that I have made mistakes and lost money

i did step up & offer to do the paint over some say it was omitting guilt i dont think it was I am in the prosses of opening a restoration shop & he promised me that he would slander my name, sue me, ect. I dont need that. But no he wants the money & he wants it now or legal action. I did the extra free stuff just to help a guy out like headliner/ insulation, painted all interior parts, installed new dash pad, installed dash, installed all interior trim, installed some exterior trim, installed all body seals & rubbers, painted & installed fender splash shields. He asked to do those things because he didnt want to scratch the paint. I stepped up & didnt charge him. In my world that is what mopar guys do & im getting burned for it. I couldve charged him for all that. Whats all that extra worth ?
