I've been wobbling around at the borderline of diabetes for a number of years. I'm thinking I should invest in a monitor so I can check it maybe at least once a week

Anybody got suggestions for "bang for buck" AKA something that works and isn't overly priced? Evidently medicare is no help on this

Hands down… best CGM is a Dexcom. With the latest version (G6) my son rarely has to do any finger pricks.

Understood. From dexcom you can get their dedicated receiver as the display device. No smart phone needed.

Yes sir. Medicare is a BIG help if you get one of those Medicare Advantage plans. Blood pressure monitors and blood sugar monitors are provided at no cost. That's just the tip of the iceberg.

Thanks Rob I thought I remember asking and you had to be "in treatment" to get them to pay. I'll recheck

Thanks Greg, I'll check into that

It may require a prescription. But with one of the advantage plans, they pay for all of it. We have one through Humana. It's a no cost plan and in some cases they will even pay back your medicare payments.

You sound just like the infomercial

I'm gonna have to look it up on YouTube now, to make sure the old geezer wasn't wearing a pair of bear paw slippers

wal-mart meter is $10.

Their test strips are roughly 25 cents each, sold in containers of 50.

That's WAY less than any other brand.

Lancet and refills for that are cheap as well.

If you only intend to do occasional testing.....

I usually do 4 times a day.

I have no "smart phone" and won't be.................
Me either, I check morning and before dinner, once a week won't tell you much, A1C is a more important one-time number.

Everything you need to get started is on this page...
https://www.walmart.com/search?q=relion+prime

alcohol preps
monitoring system
lancing device
test strips
lancets

I got 2 of the monitoring systems, I just paid $17 for the second one the other day and now the website shows $9. That is a great deal and they are accurate enough. Get 2 because if you get a crazy reading, you can try another unit. It matches my lab bloodwork readings closely. The lancing device is nice because you can adjust the depth.

I’m invested in a company applying for the ok to produce an implant that monitors your blood sugar every second of every day. Sens hopefully hits it bigtime.

I'm actually standing in line to get my "3 month" average done at the clinic. I had mine covered as I am diabetic. They are "pushing" me to the needle, but am fighting it as much as possible. A 10 yr diabetic which I am usually ends up on the needle. Also "Libre" is a patch that they stick into your skin. That gives you a "live" reading. Again NO THANKS!
I can deal with the finger pricks to check blood.
You should check 1 hour before meal and 1 hour after. So theoretically approx 6-8 times a day. I'll get you the make/model of mine shortly.

check before a meal...

...then check 1-2 hours after.

You should be somewhere between 80 and 120 both times.

If not, you got some work to do.

My meter goes to 600 and the first time I checked mine it read "HI", meaning it was over the range!

I have to test every day and use Contour Next ($ 29.00) My Medicare( Plan F)makes me pay for the Monitor but Pays for the test strips which are outrageous in cost. Been using this for 8 years now.

i use the libre cgm 14 day sensor ,it applies to the back of your arm and comes with a small reader to check bs i like it only down side is i have knocked it off when working on cars, you can check bs as many times a day you want to, i take it to doctor and he can download bs and print a copy off, their not cheap but beats pricking your finger's

I use the free style Libre and read my scanc off my phone. If your BS. Reading is 120 2 hours after you eat, you must be eating heads od lettuce only.

My doctor says I'm one of very few patients that doesn't mind the poking and sticking.

It's really not that bad.

Us busted knuckle guys should be somewhat used to that sort of thing by now.

Non-diabetic glucose levels shouldn't be above about 120 no matter how much time has passed, as the body is "doing it's job".

One of my friends who is famous for putting out big spreads for dinner parties checked his with my meter because we thought he might be.

30 minutes after eating a whole pile of food and about 5 beers, his was 86.

Mine, after insulin and another half hour, was about 175, but back down to about 130 after another hour.

In fact, my friends was 86 before the meal as well. I believe mine was 120.

I have been sticking myself for more than 15 years. I tried the Free Style Libre, scan and done. No I won’t go back to sticking myself if I can help it.

Here is mine Del. You can hook to computer with the downloaded app(I dont). I just scroll thru my readings on the unit itself. Test strips are pricey, but my plan covers them thankfully.
I may have another reader at home somewhere??
Yeah you would figure that us busted knuckle guys could endure the "pain" that comes with pin prick lol.

I don't think I'm skeered of needles. Since my mid 20's I've had random head to toe hives attacks, where were pretty bad for awhile. Nowadays they are much less frequent, maybe 1 or 2 a year and "manageable." But in my young days I had to shoot up with epinephrine. Used to carry a 'bee sting kit" everywhere. That crap will ruin your day!!
