Although I live in an Open Carry State I feel uncomfortable showing the whole world I have a weapon on me. Right now I have a 9MM Ruger P89 that feels to cumbersome to conceal. Besides I've never really liked it that well. I'm not well versed in handguns at all and plan to attend local classes here to gain the knowledge I need. What I'm asking is for suggestions for a good Pistol to carry that doesn't cost the National Debt to buy.

I have a Ruger P85 I bought new in the mid-eighties. Love that gun, but it is a brick. Shoots fantastic, just with all the other options out there, it now sits in the safe a lot. My most recent "I love it" 9mm is the new Ruger Max 9. I love it, fantastic front site, small with great capacity. I would highly recommend it, as it is priced right as well.

Plenty of reviews on Youtube as well.

A good one is the LC9 Ruger. Mrs. Big John has one and it's a decent size and still a 9mm.

If you want to get smaller and don't mind going to a smaller caliber, the Ruger LCP .380 is a solid piece too. I'll carry mine with a pocket holster right in my front pocket.

I like revolvers because you can't beat the simplicity of "pull the trigger". I carry a Taurus magnesium 856 .38 special snubby. The Taurus has 6 shots.

First thing you need to ask yourself is if you are wanting a Revolver or Semi-auto. That's where it all starts. And the answer you will get with that is A to Z.

I am a revolver guy myself.

Here's a winner right here:

I thought about this for a long time before I started really carrying concealed everywhere. If you carry concealed, that means "whatever" situation is probably going to be close quarters. I chose the NAA .22 Magnum 5 shot revolver. I carry it in a legal, leather pocket holster, with five more rounds in a snap pocket in the holster.

Inexperienced people always laugh when I tell them I carry a .22. All of my close law enforcement friends, and I have several, all agree they'd probably rather take a .38 shot than a .22 Magnum. It's a nasty little round, especially the little hollow points I carry in it. It's light, small and I've had to tell myself, "Rob, go put that back in the car", because I even forgot it was there, when we'd go in for like a car tag or somethin.
lol

It's only a 1 5/8 barrel, but if you practice with it, you can bust a bullseye at 25 yards with a hip shot. I can.

I believe that a concealed carry gun should be accurate, reliable, easily concealed, as comfortable to carry as possible and in an effective cartridge. Kahr autoloaders in 9mm and 45ACP are my favorites.

personally i hate the long trigger pull of the LC9
im always tempted to turn the gun up and look down the barrel halfway down the pull to see if something is happening

my money is on the M&P shield
i carry mine in a 9MM

Before you buy anything go to a range that rents weapons and shoot anything you can. You may find what feels comfortable to someone else doesn’t fit you. Shoot every caliber you can. There is no right caliber. The weapon you want is the one that fits you best in the caliber you shoot best.

38 special Smith & Wesson snub nose. I also have a Smith & Wesson shield 9 which is a nice little carry

For a bigger 9mm I like my CZ75 compact D (decocker) they changed the name a couple years back. For a super small conceal, the Rugar LCP in 380 it’s the size of a small IPhone...

ive always been told if you use a .22 for a concealed carry you should file down the front sights
that way, it doesnt hurt when they shove it up your bum after you shoot em with it

I prefer stuff that's "double actionish" meaning double revolvers or DA only semi autos WITH NO safety, largely because since forever, no two safeties on various models operate the same way/ same direction. And they ain't all "all that safe" either

Ruger KCLR 357, Kahr .40 and sometimes a .380

Being the owner of a gun shop for 27 years the most asked question is “what firearm should I buy”, it comes down to several things such as what will the intended use be, what is there experience and ability in handling a weapon and how does the firearm feel in there hand, it’s not a one size fits all.
larger Frame size and barrel length will feel better in the hand for most and shootablility will be better than a smaller pistol, but will be less concealable, as for a smaller pistol you will generally be giving up accuracy but will gain concealment

That's one reason I like my .22 mag revolver. It has two safeties. Both of which are defeated AS SOON AS the hammer is pulled back.

You would not make that statement if you saw what my "little" gun does to a watermelon at 25 yards.

Sig sauer P365 or the Springfield hellcat

Two great suggestions right there. ^^^^

I carry an older Sig P290, it conceals well, even under just a T shirt and my muffin tops. I carry IWB (inside waist band) @3:30, if you are not carrying that way I would suggest giving it a try.

This is all I need.
Don't let it's appearance fool you.
American bull dog.
Oldest firearm I own.
