I recently acquired a 1977 LA 360 block and discovered this in one of the lifter bores. Some one please tell me it's no big deal PLEASE!!!! I was planning on building a stroker out of it but I think I'm screwed with block. paid $300 for it. My guess is it's hashed.

That looks like a casting shunt from a cold pour. Could it be used? Probably. But if your going to throw a ton of money at a new build. Why take the chance. Find a better block to start with.

If you going to get something else, for 300 bucks , maybe less than 200 if you pull it, you can get a whole 5.9 magnum, if you're not married to the idea of an LA...

Dont know why it quoted you but nope a magnum would suit me just fine just as long as I don't have to do a bunch of fabbing to motor mounts. Magnums were roller motors anyway right? if so, EVEN BETTER!

Well those are my thoughts. We used factory mounts with a little fab. I'm sure someone around here has some. If you already have mounts, the mod is easy.

Welcome aboard! Always good to see a fellow Virginian! I'd be hesitant to use that but tbh it probably was like that since new and im sure it ran for many many years like that. I'd probably put it away for a spare and find a different block. Magnums are pretty plentiful in my area as im sure they are in yours. There was actually a pick in pull not to far from va Beach that sold whole engines for 200-250 bucks

Hey fellow virginian, have you noticed machine shops are getting scarce? I cant find anyone within a 2 hour drive who will just dunk a block for me. I want to pull out this #'s matching 318 and recondition it and put it aside for if I ever sell this thing or get tired of romping around in a stroker but seems like everyhing involves a lengthy road trip.

If you're gonna save the block, leave it greasy. Heck, add some more, bag it and tag it.

Yes I have! It took me a while to find a good one. There are several around here but they wouldn't even talk to me once they found out I was building a budget street engine! I guess if im not spending 10 grand its not worth their time. I eventually found a guy that is old school its a 3 generation shop the grandfather owns it and does all the supervision the son does all the contract work and the grandson (who is my age) does alot of the machine work and customer service. They have been in business since the 1970s and build circle track engines for the local dirt track. But also do small side jobs too. The son does external contract work thats how I met him he does contract work at the facility I work for. He does alot of welding and machine work for us. He has three or for ppl working for it its not a huge operation but a small family owned honest business. I was extremely happy with them. It would be a long drive for you tho.

I thought about that but it will be stored in a climate controlled garage wouldn't it be better to have it ready for installation if needed?

It's not going to be "ready to install". You're going to have to clean it etc anyway if and when you decide to use it.
