Will this bore clean up, magnum head content too.

A car I bought about 5 years ago had a 360 in it. The plan was always to put the big block in it and maybe put the 360 in the car in my truck. I never drove the car much, it ran real good, but at cruise I always thought it smelled a little funny. Compression test had all the holes around 185-190psi.

Pulled a head after poking a camera in the spark plug hole. was thinking maybe the head was cracked but I think it might be another present from the previous owner. The short head bolts were pretty easy to break loose with a 15" ratchet. The long head bolts were tighter and actually popped when I broke them loose. Gasket was 8553pt.

So the bore had coolant sitting in it and it has this black raised stuff on it. I already hit it with a little scotchbrite and some penetrating oil, it's coming off but is really slow going.
What will clean this off? A brake fluid soak? Trans fluid? I don't wanna just rotate the motor over and let the rings scrape it...

second, do these look like stock magnum heads with some gasket matching? the pushrod pinch is .828" roughly.
The valves and springs look stock or what?? I see where the pushrod holes in the heads were massaged some but a few were still rubbing.

also is this raised pyramid shape in the port floor stock??

That’s rust in the bore. To me it doesn’t look good at all. Might clean up at 030 but the machinist should give you a better idea. You’ll likely never get it to clean up without boring.
 
Can’t see the numbers on the pistons to tell how far it’s already been bored but clearly been rebuilt. H116cp hyper pistons.
 
Thats some heavy rust/pitting. It will require a re-bore to remove it. First step would be to throw a bore gauge on it and see what its at now. That block might be toast.
 
Yup. .030 over might clean it up. Might not. Don't know about the heads. I'm sure someone will chime in about them.
 
Sleeve the bad holes and use it. The sleeves will be better than the factory bores.

Certainly one option. Not the most cost effective, but it'll sure work. I'm cleanin up a slant 6 block now gettin it ready to take and get a sleeve put in. How's that for saving something? I'm a glutton for punishment. LOL

A different block and .030 hone job with same pistons or 2-3 sleeves at $180 a piece? What all the others look like?

I've gotta pull the other head. So far this is the only bore that is messed up, 1,3 and 7 look nice.

Maybe you'll get lucky. I could see one sleeve. But two or more and I'd be huntin a block. Good luck with it man.
 
Looks like the mice got in a port and used that cylinder for a rest room

gonna pull the other head tonight, crossing fingers the other bank has good bores still.
called machine shop, they can sleeve it. he said that made more sense if only one bore is bad. my brother has a few 360 cores and also a set of RHS indy-X heads. I'm not one to scrap stuff over something that's perfectly fixable, so hopefully i'm just looking at a sleeve and I take a shot at a proper cleaning/reassembly.
I wouldn't mind scrapping the magnum heads and trying to get those Indy-X heads though.

Honestly I was thinking I was looking at a new set of heads. So one sleeve and new rings and some gaskets isn't too bad. I had always planned on getting into this motor some to see what was in it and calc the compression accurately. The previous owner couldn't remember what cam was in it. I think I need to order a degree wheel.

I’m not sure what it costs to install a sleeve lately. I haven’t had to had one done in about 10 years.
 
As a machinist, I'd like to point out that if they sleeve one cylinder, it is going to distort the cylinder beside it....just want to mention that, something to think about.
 
What if you bore that one cylinder .040 or 60 and use 1 oversized piston? They weigh the same out the box supposedly.
