I found out my column is what is jammed and it’s stuck in 1st gear position. I’ve disconnected from trans and linkage all works and all gears work no issue. What can be causing this column to be stuck ? It’s very not janky and low miles car or doesn’t seem to be sloppy or anything but alas it’s stuck

The mechanism gets worn from years of sliding action 1 to 2 gear then third to 2or first. You can improve it some what by making sure the bushings are tight and neutral is adjusted correctly. But there is a nack to shifting a worn out column. You have to exaggerate the shift pattern into a definite H pattern and not try and slide it into second or back into low. Even still it will hang up every now and then. But pop the hood and shift the levers back to neutral and your off again.

I tried this with linkage still hooked up ant here is no play or anything to adjust to get it back to neutral . I jacked up car today and took linkage off and Trans isn’t stuck it’s thr Column but not sure what can be binding if it’s not hooked to anything

No your right it’s Jamed in the column. But if you place the shifter in neutral then look under the hood. You will see the two levers not inline. By moving one or the other it will be back in neutral. It takes some time and attempts to figure out what you need to do as a young lad it happened all the time to me.

I can’t place it anywhere lol it’s stuck badlt in 1gear position

We used a long screw driver to pop it back in to place.
If you can't get it working just get a floor shifter and put in it.

Get a factory service manual for it. That will show you how to repair the column if it needs it and adjust it properly afterwards.

Here is the column in my 72 D-100. The short lever in the middle is the one that works with the"back and forth" or "forward and back" of the shifter. The two longer levers are the actual shift levers that actuate the shift levers on the trans. You'll see I have a ny-tie and hose clamp conglomeration. The clamp is to hold the ny-tie, the ny-tie is to hold the back lever back. When trying to shift, that back lever would drop before **** was lined up. Thus jamming **** together.

The 903 is column shift only - no mounting pads for a floor shift mechanism, so Chrysler did not make a floor shift setup for the 903.

The 230 has a mounting boss (single for A-body) or dual mount bosses for B and E-bodies.

The B and E-body dual mount tail shaft 230 was also used in trucks, but those were column shift only.

The 903 is side mounted linkage same as 230 or even 833 I just thought maybe something was possible there to make 903 floor shift .

either way my Column is epically stuck in first gear position . I’ve taken linkage off and it still doesn’t move . I can’t find pics of videos anywhere or what or how it’s even supposed to move when not stuck. Anyone have one working properly that they can show me ?

Perfect lol . I can’t find a 3 on tree column anywhere either .

it would be helpful to see the mechanism moving and working on someone’s that isn’t stuck so I can see what it should be doing . My poor car is done . Ready to rock other than I’m stuck in first gear lol . It ran and shifted amazingly until a month ago .

does this help ? This is what I have and what I’m looking at . My screw / bolt closest to fire wall was very loose and about to fall out loose . I ran it back in all the way and didn’t fix anything . I backed it off a bit as that slot seems like it should be moving back and forth within the slot but it won’t .
Again my linkage is off the column and I’m still jammed up and don’t want to break anything.

Just go underneath the hood , take one hand and a couple of fingers and put the two shift rods together! Same height ! Once you do that you will be able to move your shifter ! Go about your way ! If it does it again , and it will do the same thing ! I’ve didn’t many many times ! In fact I still have the truck in my garage lol !!

Maybe I’m not being clear . The two levers on the Column are disconnected from linkage . With my key turned the shifter in the car is stuck in 1gear position and the two levers under the hood are stuck solid . I don’t know which way to try ent move them but I’ve prye on them each way a bit and they don’t budge

Are the two stuck levers in the same position ? Or are they apart

Post a pic of the underhood linkage/levers so we can see.....
