So after years of sitting and finally starting to get settled into our new house, it was time to start working on the 68. Street Demon installed. Brakes gone over and bled. I Changed the oil today. And yes, I know how much everyone loves the Fram filters but i just had to go against the grain and switch to WIX 51515xp.

I did cut the Fram open just to see what the hype was all about. The filter element was glued top and bottom, i found no gaps, ends were clipped together. It has the standard anti-drain back valve. So far i was impressed given the negative press Fram usually gets.

Now what i havent seen before is the spring with a combined bypass valve. I tried prying off the disk on the bottom of the spring but it was spring loaded so I left it. It seemed to have significant pressure. The filter element had an even amount of grime and debris so i think it was working properly. There was what looked like charred oil on the inside of the filter, im going to assume it was on he header side.

If your curious, this motor is a 1990 roller LA from the junkyard.

Ummmm . Take a look at the “spring” is it not a bent piece of sheet metal? How many heat cycles before that thing gives up and allows crap thru the engine.

THAT is why we dislike Fram. Take a Wix apart and you will find a very different spring. An actual spring.
 
Yes, do your homework. There have been threads here about filter comparisons and quality. Check out YouTube and see for yourself how poor quality they really are. Side by side comparisons tell the story.
 
FWIW The Tough Guard is built better than the standard orange Fram, still not a great filter but far better than the regular Fram..
 
You can save yourself a few bucks and get a regular wix 51515 filter next time. "XP" is a random weave synthetic filter media. It is purposely designed to not filter as well as regular cellulose filter media 51515. It's is made for synthetic oils AND extended filter change intervals, so it won't plug up prematurely.

I use Mopar filters on my other Mopars and they have the same spring and the fram...I figure if its good enough for Ma Mopar its good enough for my daily drivers.

I didnt know that about the xp filters. are all extended interval filters like that?

I run Mobil 1 10w40.
 
Wix is pretty cheap through Rockauto if you order parts there. I order up a filter or two with every order. I usually have one for each vehicle on hand. If you want to bulk order here's a good place. Put together an order for all your vehicles and even lawn mowers. Don't forget a new cabin filter for your new car too. I have ordered a year's worth and keep them downstairs where it is cool and dry. Wix filter deal
