I have a 73 Plymouth duster took it for a drive after 40 MPH make a screeching gear noise in the cluster, needle was bouncing.around like crazy , then after I stopped the car and drove it back home the noise stopped and the speedo needle went back to normal , can anybody tell me if this happened to anyone , should I be looking to buy a speedo cluster any help will do thanks

Did you have speedo cable off on either end? Or do something under dash? I had one years ago that did it a few times then it was fine. But it was extreme cold.

Have you done anything under the dash lately?

I have heard of the spedo cable being tensioned up or down and causing the internals of the speedo to make contact with parts it should not.

Squealing bushing. I have no idea if anything in speedo can be lubricated and with what.

Sounds like one of the strands in the speedo cable broke, getting caught on the outer casing, making the speedo flick. Strand has probably broken off now or got bent so that it is no longer causing a problem.

I've had it happen, more than once, I more than one car. Usually heals up on its own. It is kinda freaky, for a split second, once you realize it's just the speedo cable, it ain't nothing

Mix some powdered graphite with white lithium grease and lube the cable with it. Slantsixdan did a writeup on the slantsix.org forum years ago on it and it works.

I have had cables sound terrible. Never had an actual gear or speedo make noise, but I suppose it can happen. Rock auto has speedo cables for $8.
