Hey FABO,

I've done a bunch of searching on here but can't find a simple piece of info.

What size and thread are the hood mounting bolts for a 1970 Duster? The bolts that go through the hinges into the hood.

Also, are these the same as the fender mounting bolts?

Thank in advance.

They are 5/16” thread bolts and yes they are the same size as the fender mounting bolts the length
I believe is different.

Yeah, I picked up some 5/16 bolts but they dont seem to wanna go past the first 2 or 3 threads on the hood. But, they thread all the way into the fender J nuts. I'm not really wanting to just torque down the bolts into the hood and do some damage.

Has the hood been off the car long? You might want to chase the threads in the mount holes with a starting tap of the bolt size. They could have some crud in the threads

Ok y'all, I got it licked.

Just gave the new bolts some extra juice and they threaded in fine. When I took them out there was dirt on the threads, so between sandblasting the hood and then having it sit in the shop during all of the other bodywork (think about filler dust that gets everywhere), I'm guessing there was just some build up in the holes. Problem solved, all good. Thanks for the replies!

5/16 18 always run a tap in first. The bolts are not the same as fender bolts the washers are smaller to allow for hood adjustment. They are the same thread size as the fender though

What is the internal nuts in a hood ? They are connected and slide back & forth together . Mine snapped today . I want to cut a hole and replace . But don’t know what that is called or if anyone makes them

It's a caged metal slug. What snapped?
Good luck getting in there, not saying that it can't be done, but have fun. If you snapped a bolt off, drill and tap it out.

The two nuts / connected inside the hood that slide back & forth snapped. I got my bolt out but now I need to cut hood open a d try and make something

Somthing doesn't sound right, there is a steel bar that is caged in your hood. It has two holes drilled and tapped into it.
If you snapped it, you never would have gotten your bolt out. My '69 H P hood has a compromised cage on the Rt side, the slug slid out and ended up stuck in the front of the hood during hood removal. I had to bang on it to dislodge it and get it to slide to the back of the hood, then fish it into place , get a bolt into it to hold it, then remount the hood. The slug then sripped a hole, drilled and tapped it up to 3/8th. I bought a fiberglass hinge type hood for a replacement. It's 50 years old and rusted in there, plus the hood had been in an accident and was popped a little in the center, so I went that way instead of buying a steel repop. I guess that what I am saying, there is no nut in there.

It snapped / I used screwdriver to pintch it so I couod back bolt out ( was only halfway in ) but the “ bar “ is like a paper clip lol

Ok. Well, I am sorry then, I really don't have an answer for you. Looks like it will be an experiment from here on out. If all else fails, you can buy a new hood, steel or fiberglass. The glass hood that I have was purchased from Glasstek. I had to massage the hood hinge some, the front hinge mechanism was a no go. The placed bolt holes/nuts were off. Other wise, the hood fit well, sans part of the pass side gap, but I am happy with it. So I went with hood pins, was going to do that anyway. I can not say how other suppliers
hoods would fit or not fit.
Good Luck!

5/16 thread ? How long ? How big should head bolt be

what is boot size for going through hinge into the hood of a 71 duster ?
5/16 seems to be only answer I see in any of these but that’s not enough info . Does anyone have a link ?

Not only did I ask for a 71 A body duster not a 66-70 b body but looking for actual measurements and no one has posted those. Strange . I kinda hate this forum . I ask so clear questions and people always giving vague and wrong answers or terrible solutions. I’m done with this goodbye y’all .
Buddy, at some point you gotta figure some things out yourself. Go to the hardware store and grab an assortment of bolts, different sizes, lengths, thread count, etc. Find the one that works and then get however many more you need. This is not rocket science. And, yes, it's easy to post a question here hoping for a quick answer. But, when that answer doesn't come, you might have to put your brain in gear.

Sometimes you have to wait until the correct member gives and answer before you start putting the site down. I have a drawer full of 71 hood bolts. and all my parts are sorted. I usually offer them for free to members who appreciate other members on this site . Not only are they a certain size but they have a different insignia in the head for different plants. Just a very small portion of hardware I have. Good luck to you, Try Moparts. "See ya later alligator" LMFAO

I agree I didn’t notice they were for a b body but a hood bolt is a hood bolt 66 to 75. They are 5/16-18
X 1” long with I believe 3/4” OD captured washer. Pretty easy to search for the correct bolts for the hood man!

Hood hinges changed in late 72. Be careful of the washer size and length. Early hoods have a threaded plate that moves in the hood for adjustment. Later hoods have thread-serts and the hinges are slotted. If using an early bolt on a later hood hinge be careful not to **** the washer in the hole you will ruin the thread-sert in the hood and possibly break it free. Trying to fix that after paint can be a real pain.

I’m not familiar with them after 72 but by the looks of the hinge holes they may have went to a 3/8 bolt. We are talking about a 71’ right?

No they are still 5/16 but a larger washer. Deck lids are 3/8. 72 and later use the same size washer as a fender bolt.
