Thanks to all whom can help. I have a 72 Demon in need of a hood. I bought one at carlisle. It says it came off a 72 Demon on it. How can I verify? I have read that 70-71 Dart/ Demon hoods are different in the hinge area. Is this true? I thought they were the same. Tod

I'm not saying that's wrong, I've just never heard of it. I almost bought a 70 Swinger hood a couple weeks ago, and externally it looked just like my 71 Demon hood.

I pulled a hood off a 72' Dart Swinger many, many years ago to put on my Demon and fits and bolted up fine.

John

I can't say one way or the other...I have to 71 Demons and the hoods look the same...NOW you can slap me )

The only difference between 70-72 Dart/Demon hoods are that 70 Dart hoods have the script across the front of the hood. There are no differences in the hinge areas or any other parts of the hood from 70-72.

Joe

Thanks Guys you are the best. I got a little concerned when I read the info on hood hinge set-up.

I have a '72 Demon hood that will not fit on my '71 Demon. Does the hood you have, have eliptical holes and the plate that the hood bolts thread into... slide loosely for adjustment? That is what my '71 hood is like. The '72 hood has round holes, and the plate that the hood bolts thread into is fixed. Little to no adjustment for the '71 hinge.

I just went out and looked at the hoods of my 70 Dart and 72 Demon. If there is any differences in the two I could not find it. Look the same to me and bolt up the same way.

Go to my gallery and you will see! I am going through this 'nightmare' right now. I bought a hood that I THINK may have come off a '72 Valiant, looks like tha Duster hood, but it's about 1-1/2" shorter!

What you are trying to do is totaly different then what we are talking about here. As you have found Duster and Dart hoods are not the same. The only way to make a Duster hood work on a Dart is to change over th whole front end. IE fenders, hood, bumper, grill....

Plymout put Duster front ends on Darts starting in 71 and called them Scamps.

My point is that they LOOKED the same. In a group of parts the Scamp hood has the same ridge line, same front edge treatment, so measure before you buy, or in my case before you spend much time in preparation.

From what I could figure was that the Duster hood should work with the '75 Dart Swinger fenders (one piece, no extensions) but that the Valiant hood is shorter.

welcome to ma mopars quality control I have seen F body hoods that are an 1 1/2 difference before. Different year same part. Fenders too, I had to sell a perfectly good fender because it was way too long.

I don't mean to highjack this thread, I am just trying to figure out the same thing, just that Slappy wants to know if the Duster / Demon hoods are the same (I think they are). What I am trying to point out is that the Valiant looks like it, but is different, but without knowing that ahead of time, I saw a hood that looked like what I wanted, spent time and money getting it ready to put on my car only to find out it wasn't the same. And it really bummed me out.

(If someone wants to look at my gallery and confirm what hood I have, I'd be thrilled. At this point, I don't know if a Duster hood will solve my problem, or fenders or what fenders I really need).

Plymouth Duster and valiant hoods are the same .
Dodge darts and demons and dart sports eventually the same .

Plymouth scamp used Dodge Dart / demon front clip

plymouth and dodge stuff is often very close looking but is not the same. The only way to make the hood and stuff Match the way you are talking is to swap endure front clip . I would not recommend it.

the 70-71 hoods have a different hood adjustment system at the hinges. As long as you use the hinges that match the hood (70 or 71 hood and hinges or 72 hood and hinges) you are good to go on any 70-72 Dart or Demon. Mix them up and you can't install and adjust the hood properly.

By the way the 1970-72 Plymouth front end (fenders, hood, grille, etc.) is unique to Plymouth and the Dodge pieces are unique to Dodge, No Scamp came with a Dart style front end, Scamps came with Duster front sheet metal, just like every Demon had a Dart front end.

Funny, I installed a '71 Dart hood using my '74 Duster hood hinges and had no issues whatsoever. I obviously swapped the entire front clip, but retained the '74 Duster hood hinges.

Also, holy thread resurrection batman.

For those curious, a few reference pictures showing the length of a Dart hood compared to Duster front fenders (the Dart hood is longer than a Duster/Valiant hood). Also, the clearly original '74 hood hinges (tan) on my '71 hood (black).

I wonder if the 70 grille would fit in the 74 fenders ?

A '70 Duster grille with '74 Duster fenders?

Yes, it can be done. The fenders need some additional holes drilled and some bracket changes if I remember correctly. And you still need the '70-'72 hood and hood latch panel, lower grille filler panel, bumper, etc.

The difference is in the hood hinges. They changed I believe in 72. The later hinges have larger holes than the early ones and the early slots are different.

Oh sorry, I meant a 70 dart grille in the 74 fenders.

That's trickier. The grille can likely be made to fit the fenders with some new holes or additional brackets. And the hood should line up and the hood support/latch panel should still work.

Where it gets tricky is the bumper and lower valance, and possibly the headlight trim. The '74 Dart fenders have a different relief for the bumper, and no way to attach the valance used on the '70-'72 cars. So that would require fabrication and some body work for sure. Not sure about the headlight trim either, as the '74 fenders wouldn't have a place to bolt those chrome eyebrows. None of that stuff is impossible, but from a time and money perspective it would probably be a lot easier to buy a set of '70-'72 fenders.

It's easier to convert the '73+ Dart fenders for use on the '67-69 Darts than it is for the '70-'72 body style.

Thanks for the detailed reply. Good stuff.
