Pump It Down....EASY

So I took out valve and added to the stack of stock (assumed) washers. Total stack measured 0.120. New fluid although I noticed the pump very dirty on inside. I wanted to see the change vs spend time on removing/cleaning, knowing it will probably come out for more adjustment later. I did the mod while not removing the pump or lines except for the "in" line that the valve was behind. I would have to say that the added shims made a slight but noticeable difference. My plan is to remove pump once more and possibly (pending on reaction of the people reading this) go up as far as 0.138/0.139 as the new shims measure about 0.018/0.019. My other plan might be to just add an inline filter to see if that slows the flow and helps to "pump it down".

I guess you can be the test mule. I know going up to .092 did nothing to change mine. let us know.
 
Has anyone tried a bigger pulley? and I read previously that the max was 0.125....where did that number come from?

I could see how 0.092 does very little. Mine went from stock (about 0.035 I forget already) to 0.120 and I felt it was minimal.....but significant enough to be noticeable. Im hoping to clarify the source of the 0.125 number to make a decision about going further. Or Ill just wing it and put in another 0.038 and bump all the way to 0.158!
 
There was a max shim stack size that has floated around. But I don't know if it is truly a fact.

I guess worse case is I blow a seal or something and i lose power assist. If anyone can add info before I give it a go then yes.......test mule.

next question..... any ideas of a larger diameter pulley that can be swapped out?
 
I think the best route to take at this time is to try finding the max shim pack or at least the point of no return over playing with the pulley size. Mopar late model pulleys are already pretty big and finding a larger one would be tough. Not to mention clearance issues and belt size changes. My 2 cents anyway.
 
what is the diameter? i have done some more minor adjustments to the worm gear in the box itself to take out some slop but am going to add some more shimmage.

please measure your pulley. let me know if you can where you obtained it AND as always.......a picture.
 
Big pulley, think it is stock. 6 3/4 dia, 3/8 belt
Small pulley 6 1/4 dia 1/2 belt was on car when I bought it.

Ok well I have been messing with the /6 duster steering lately and have replaced idler arm and did a bit of 'toe in' to get things from acting so 'jumpy'. I also went big on the shimmage in the pump. I put in 190 thou in shims in and at low rpm it acted like it was a manual box and then when I got her spinning, it kind of jumped free and was pleasant to drive. So, coming into a turn it was a bit lame because all of a sudden it was tough to steer. Another symptom was as I wound out the engine there was a 'kazzoo' sound that wound up with it, like something was vibrating (maybe the little ball in the valve?). So I took out a shim taking it down to 170 thou and had similar but less symptoms and now am down to 142 thou and there still is the same sypmtoms. So.....I have bled the system in between shim in/out and wonder if I am getting the Kazoo sound from operator install or from the fact there are too many shims in. I am going to go back to the 122 thou shim stack that I had recently and had no 'Kazoo" and tolerable light steering to check my work. Ill check back if anyone is interested.

Has anyone ever installed a strut like they do on 4x's and such to dampen steering? To try to take some of the quickness out of the over-pumped system?

If you need a steering shock on one of these girls there is something wrong........something loose, or alignment, etc. Seems like there's also a possibility you have dropped the pressure to the box so much that it is not "locking up" for lack of better term. EG if you drain a box, it becomes quite "sloppy" when steered manually with no fluid or pump
 
Great info. I shimmed mine to about 120 thousandths & it really didn’t make the difference I was looking for. That was the highest recommendation. I was going to try higher, but with your results I think I will quit on it.
I think the real answer is to get a Firm Feel or Steer & Gear box, but that is $$$.
 
Just to add to this thread, I just picked up my Duster from the shop. I had them install a Borgeson power steering unit. My car now drives very similar to a modern car. I also had them install the Borgeson power reducing valve as well to take the pressure down to about 900lbs (three shims) which is what was recommened for A body cars. I might even take it down a bit more but I'll give it a while before I decide. Anyway, this was a nice upgrade to the handling of the car! No more play in the wheel and much easier to handle at slow speeds!
 
Interesting. Is it actually a regulator, or does it just bleed pressure of the high side to the return? Either way seems like it would just make the pump work harder.
PS pumps are vain pumps, they pump more only when the pump is turned faster. I believe this bypasses some of the pressure to the rerun line.
 
There is a PDF with the instructions that states approximate pressures as shims are added. Just Google Borgeson 899001.
 
I got the kit and used all four washers. Works pretty good even though I got a manual box stashed out back coming soon. Along with manual brakes if I don't sell it I'm a convert it to a 4-speed or put the 3000 stall I got in it
