Hey everyone, I’ve searched and searched but cannot find an answer. I just inherited a 1963 Valiant Signet convertible. I’m new to classic mopar. It has the original 225 with push button auto trans. The motor was froze. It came with another 225 from the mid 70’s. Can I swap in the newer 225? I want to get this thing back on the road asap. Thanks.

Yes, but you'll need to make a ring for the cranks register to center the earlier/smaller convertor snout.
The issue is the later crank register is larger than the early ones. Ankther way is..You can also have a converter made using the later case with early inerds. The spline count is different as well between late and early. Fwiw. 18 vs 27 or 29 iirr

This ^^^ is the main thing. It's really not an end al be all so don't let it worry you. @Charrlie_S may still have some adapter rings. It just slips in the rear crank register and adapts the smaller converter hub just like @MOPAROFFICIAL described. Nothin to it. Also, you need to make sure your oil pan is the same. They are all interchangeable, so, again, don't fret over it. If you need to swap it out, the old one will go right on the newer motor. You can tell by numbers stamped into the bottom of the pan. The later pan will in all likelihood not fit the 63 Valiant, as they take a specific pan. Since you already have it, just swap it on the newer engine. Take note of the oil pickup as it may be different and match the early pan, you may need to swap it, too. Never fear, it simply unscrews out of the block. You'll also want to make sure you clean the pan out good and the pickup too as they may have sludge buildup. That's about all I can think of right this minute. I'm not having a good health day today so forgive me if I left anything out. We have some good guys on here and they'll chime in where I left off if I did leave anything out. Good luck and if you run into a snag, just holler.

To install the later 225 in the 66 and older "A" body, with a early 904 trans.
66 down oil pan and pickup
66 down engine brackets and "rubber" mounts.
Crank adapter/spacer ring (use the flexplate from the late engine)
Possibly the carb and choke from the early engine (linkage issues) Need to keep the "twisty" linkage unless modifying the intake system, and trans "kickdown".
Possibly distributor from early engine, unless converting from points to electronic ign.
If changing from a 170 to a 225, a different front exhaust pipe.
All the parts needed except for the crank adapter/flex plate can be swapped from the old engine to the new engine.
PS: If you want a crank adapter, send me a message.

Hey thanks for the replies fellas. Does anyone have a picture of the ring I need? Also seeing as how I don’t know the condition of the newer engine, other than it’s not stuck, I’ll have to tear into it to see it’s condition. It may be just as easy to tear into the original 225 and see if it can be rebuilt.

Ok thanks so much for the details I appreciate it. I’ll let you know about the ring.

Depending on the year of the replacement engine, these are some other differences that you will notice....They went from spark plug tubes to external plugs in '75, the harmonic balancer timing marks changed over the years, as did the intake and exhaust manifolds. After 1980 or so, they went from solid cams to hydraulic, and the valve cover changed too. Keep these things in mind when you start swapping things around. Some items will have no problem, but, others won't mix and match at all.

None of that makes any difference for the swap he wants to do. He just needs to keep everything on the donor engine, that belongs with that engine, except for the items I mentioned. The items that need changing to do the swap, interchange with no issues.

"Twisty" linkage. Is that a bonafide factory technical term in the service manual? What page is it on? LOL

It would if any of the parts in question are bad on either engine and he decides to swap them. It doesn't hurt to know what fits and what doesn't. He's not the only one watching this thread. Others may have similar questions about early and late swaps and what will work or not when searching for a replacement engine.

I would have just looked for another early 225 but the extra engine was free. Hard to turn down a free anything lol! Thanks again for all the great info!
