Looking for the correct small block bell housing for the 833 4speed (overdrive version). Didn’t know there was a difference in the outside dimensions and mine won’t fit into my regular 4 speed housing.

Are you trying to install an O/D 833 in a early A? What do you have? Pictures?
Correct, 318 going into a 66 cuda. Didn’t know there was an OD 833. Builder needs to keep moving - there’s a shop close that can turn the parts down on a lathe- maybe my only option.

Looks like you want to run a newer aluminum 10.5 bell housing? You can also swap out the O/D main case for the small 307 standard A Body one and it will slip right in with the small front bearing retainer. What front bearing retainer is on the trans now?

Not sure, tranny guy rebuilt it, then I took it to garage that’s doing the S6/V8 swap. Dan at brewers said turning down has been done before - they didn’t have a housing in stock. We are pressed for time, so new case locate and rebuild are off the table at this point. Lesson learned, should have bought a 67, 68 car lol

Before installing the transmission be sure to check the OD of the bearing retainer & the ID of the bell housing. From your pictures, the paint on the bearing retainer may cause fitment issues. Ask me how I know.

I ran into this same thing when putting an OD 833 behind my 318 in the late 90's. I didn't have access to other bearings retainers and chose to go the "turn down" route too. Word of caution, my shop wasn't able to take it all off of the outside of the bearing retainer because it would get into the outside of the bolts that hold it on. He had to take the rest out off the bellhousing by opening it up the rest of the way (he split the difference). Opening up the bell got close to the 2 bolts for the clutch fork pivot, but everything clears fine. The only downside is the bell and retainer are now a matched pair. I paid $150 then, not sure what one would charge to do this today. Just thought I would throw that out in case it's an option for you.

You are aware that you'll also need Brewer's modified clutch bellcrank and misc. linkage parts, since the 10.5 bellhousing never came in the early As? The factory 9.5" linkage will not work, nor will the later A 10.5" linkage.

Making the OD trans fit your bellhousing depends on what you have.
Does your transmission have the 307 (3.70 bolt circle) or 308 (4.16 bolt circle) front bearing? ODs could have either.
What is the retainer hole diameter in your bellhousing? 4.354 or 4.807?
There are certain combinations that can be made to work, with factory parts or creative machining; some combinations that can't.
Your best bet at this point is to try to locate an OD bellhousing to use, like you're trying to do.

Hey @66Kooda , I have a new OD bell posted ( search " SB OD bell Housing" ). Sale is pending when forum member gets out of hospital middle of March ( which is soon ). If this falls thru, you are next in line. PM if interested.

Can you measure the bolt circle of the front bearing retainer? What bell housing casting are you using.

PM

Yeah, he’s taking some off the retainer and some off the housing. He told me they will forever be a matched set.

So to clarify. Ma had 2 Small block Bell housings. 1 for the standard 833 and the other for the OverDrive 833?

Several. Don't forget the three speeds and the NP435. You have to include those and know what you're lookin at because folks will try to pull a fast one on you.

I have an extra Ansen blowproof bell housing that has the larger 4.807 pilot diameter. If you have not modified the bell housing yet, I would take that as a partial trade.

Thanks everyone, the machining went well - everything fits good. First fire up is this afternoon, fingers crossed.
