Got my 66 barracuda ready for exhaust, so I thought. I have built and installed 68 340 and used original exhaust manifolds. Took it in to get exhaust and was told passenger side was too tight to hook up. oil filter is in way. Is the 273 oil filter in a different spot on the motor? So now I need to find a manifold that exits out the rear of manifold instead of the middle but all I see is middle exits except on the big block manifolds. I know putting a 340 in a early A is done all the time, what am I missing?

340 or 273 manifolds and are you using a using a oil filter adapter?

340 or 273 manifolds?
I'm going to assume he kept the pewny 273 manifolds on there. So either the guy at the exhaust shop is a moron or he needs to use a 90 degree oil filter adapter and somehow forgot to put that on but then that takes me back to it maybe he's speaking of 340 manifolds but if he is I doubt or wonder that the driver side 340 manifold would even fit around the steering.

68 340 passenger manifold has a rear outlet. 273 would have a center outlet, as would 71 and later 340s.

The rear exit manifold barely cleared my passenger side inner fender, even after I used a BFH to flatten a protruding section. Center outlet 340 manifold fit very well.

On the driver's side a 340 manifold may or may not hit the steering coupler. On mine, I switched to a power steering column and used an adapter to hook it to the manual steering box. That moved the coupler back out of the way.

There are potential clearance issues, but they are not insurmountable.

OP needs to visit another exhaust shop. Way too many can't handle anything that's not factory stock, unless maybe it's a Chevy or a Mustang.

Way back, one shop told my kid brother they could not possibly put a right side tail pipe on Mom's 64 Barracuda. So I drove to the shop with my 65 Barracuda which at the time had 2.25 inch duals. They were like, uh - uh - uh, maybe we could try. Told them don't think so, and we drove to a nearby shop which installed 2" duals (it was just a 273) no problem.

Another shop told me they couldn't put anything bigger than a 1 7/8 inch pipe coming off a slant six manifold. I wanted 2.25. Went somewhere else.

Brother took his 62 Dodge convertible, 440 powered, to a muffler shop that proceeded to put 2.25 inch exhaust pipes, and 2 inch tailpipes on it. I told him, you have to insist, can't just let them put on whatever they think will be easiest.

Back then, there was no TTI or other outfit offering a complete hi-performance exhaust system for our cars. I'd much rather get the kit and put it in myself than deal with some jackass at a muffler shop who thinks he knows more than I do.

However, unless you run headers, no one I'm aware of makes a kit for a first gen Barracuda running factory 340 manifolds. Accurate LTD if you want a hi-po single system for 273 manifolds. 340 manifolds, no. Unless someone recently began to do so.

Anyway, a good muffler shop (emphasize GOOD) should be able to fix you up. Might have to shop around. Also, as someone already said, if you don't have the right angle oil filter adapter, you probably need to get one.

Sorry for not enough details, They are 273 manifolds and I have the oil adaptor installed. The driver side is fine he says but not the passenger side. Maybe the adaptor needs to be angled differently? Any one have a picture of one angled correctly?

How about a picture of your adapter? It can be rotated however much you need to; it's not indexed to a certain spot. If there is indeed no room to run a pipe past it, then it has to be angled wrong. Or else your muffler guy don't know s----.

Here's my 67 Barracuda. Best picture of the adapter I have sitting round. There's no one exact right spot, but it should look generally like this.

Hey thanks, I have mine pointed towards the front. I will drive it around this weekend to put some miles on it so when I rotate it I can dump the break in oil. hopefully without getting a ticket for no exhaust. haha Thanks again, I think I will take it to a different shop too.

If you have the filter pointing forward you will probably get too much hot exhaust on the filter. I wouldn't run it that way. I also wouldn't rotate the adapter without replacing the gaskets. Local WalMart did that to a guy here to get the filter off. Wound up with an oil leak...

If you replace the gaskets (and I agree you should), make sure you get all three. From an ebay ad:

Also, make sure that you put the adapter at an angle that gives enough clearance between the filter and the firewall that you can get an oil filter wrench on the filter.

Somebody can chime in but isn’t using it hard on an engine to run it with just the open manifolds? I don’t think I’d run it with the oil filter pointed towards the manifold, like Jim mentioned it’s gonna cook the oil filter

I've run big blocks with manifolds only. Never for a long time and never when it was really cold. Never was a problem, either.

I put a TTI exhaust system on my 66 Dart Convertible 2.5 inch was a tight fit had to angle oil filter pointing up towards firewall, exhaust sounds good and no rattles check out the TTI website
