Question about non OD 833 and rpm range

My record for pulling the trans is 17 minutes.
On a 4-post drive-on hoist, with the tool-cart loaded and at the ready.
This includes removing the front pair of 3" pipes, the shifter, the driveshaft, the crossmember; and the GVod stayed on the all aluminum trans. No jack was used; I grabbed a helper from the next bay.
Air tools were used wherever possible. The unit was not drained. The BH stayed. I had made a tool to straddle the T-bars to support the rear of the engine

For a four hour trip one way;
BAM! I would throw that A833od back in the hole. It's hard to beat cruising 60=2200,
in my case 65=2240, lol.

I ran that od box for 4 years behind my 367 with a 223/230/110 cam at up to 11.3Scr with alloy heads. I ran it with several different rear gears. I learned that this combo liked a 6.80/7.00 second gear. With a 1.67 in the box, she wanted 4.10s in the back. I only had 4.30s and 3.91s; so in went the 4.30s. This made the starter gear 3.09 x 4.3=13.29 which I found unacceptable. With 3.91s, Second was 6.53 not too bad, But first was 12.08, which I thought was still too deep.
3.55s made a pretty good first gear of 10.97.
So I knew what I wanted, namely a First of 11.0, and a Second of 7.00. This could only be had with the Commando gearset, namely; 3.09-1.92-1.40-1.00 , and 3.55s for roadgears of 10.97-6.82-4.97-3.55-2.77 with the GVod; compared to
..............12.08-----6.53----3.91---2.85..... with the overdrive.
So I found a gearset at Passon Performance, and that was that. Well except I put the already purchased GVod on that. I love these ratios. I want to change nothing.
My 367 pulled that overdrive box not too bad, with it's cranking cylinder pressure of around 177 (Scr lowered with thicker headgaskets.) But I kept blowing up the tiny overdrive gear. So in the end I shelfed it.

I drove mine 2 hrs one way with 456 gears and a 5500 stall. Couldn't even hear vocals on the stereo at full volume. I was constantly watching the temp and oil pressure. My wife said she would never go again and she never did. One thing that was good was I couldn't hear her either.

that alt bracket is a standard small block one here in Australia and the throttle bracket was something temporary that i made using a b&m shifter cable bracket, that has just stayed on there lol

just seems like 3000 rpm at 60 mph is high, though i'm new to manual trans
FWIW.
With 3.23 gears and standard diameter tires, I'm running exactly 3000 at 70 (GPS) mph. My speedo is dead nuts accurate too.

I cruise the 320 miles to Carlisle and just tell myself, while trying not to shift again, that millions of miles were put on these cars at the same RPM.

We used to drive 100 miles to the strip at 3500+, 55 miles per hour stop for fuel then race, fuel up and drive home.
Those were the good old days!
 
now it's at 3000 rpm. Diff gears are 3.45, tires are 26.6 inch]
Did you ever check your tach accuracy? I have found some unpleasantly large errors especially at "low" rpm (3000 or less) in more than one tach, new or used.

I also have 26.6" tires which turn 758 revs/mile (295/50R15) and 3.91 gears, so my calculated RPM at 60 mph with no o/d is 2964. Speedometer calibrated against a GPS app and it is right on at 60. So if you really have 3.45 gears I don't know why you are at 3000 with the same diameter tires! Something doesn't add up.

However, my Autometer 5" tach reads about 2800, over 150 rpm low, at that speed. It only has a gain adjustment with no linearity tweaks. I set it on the bench (with a pulse generator and an accurate frequency counter) to be closest from 4000-7000 rpm which is where it's most important. Anyhow, check your speedo and your tach. You might be surprised ;)

To your original question, yes, it's "normal" and noisy. Not good for mileage (I'm lucky to break 10 mpg at 65 mph with my overcammed 451). But I can buy a lot of pump premium for the $5k cost of putting in a five-speed OD trans...
