8 3/4 dissasembly help needed.

Trying to remove the cross shafts and i know i need to remove this screw headed pin first but there is no clearance to turn it because if the ring gear. My book isnt helping on this one!
Knowledge needed.

Take the caps iff and take while thing out.
Then take the ring gear off? Seems like I will have to to get clearance for that screw headed pin. Why the hell
Doesn't that book tell me that!?

Good advice. Got the caps off, dropped the whole business out and tapped off the ring gear, which was the goal. Pulling this open diff from a donor 65 Newport. Plan on a new sure grip from Doc Diff. Trying to re-use ring gear and pinion. Cost savings plus i like the 3.23 ratio. Had never messed with a diff before so was following disassembly instructions and got stuck at that screw.
Now realize I dont even need to mess with the internals since I'm not reusing.
Assume i need to re-use the side adjusters and obviously the caps? Anything else? As usual, its all a learning experience for me so the advice, help, and answering what may be my dumb questions is much appreciated.

Yes on saving the side adjusters and caps. Save the pinion shims too.

Are you planning on checking pinion depth/backlash/gear mesh pattern with the new Sure Grip? (you should be) Are you replacing the pinion and carrier bearings? (you should be) What tools do you have to do all this stuff? Lot's of specialty tools needed to rebuild a diff. Holding fixture, pinion depth checking tool, spanner wrench for the side adjusters, bearing race drivers, 250+lb ft. torque wrench and cheater pipe for the pinion nut, yoke holder, dial indicator with stand for back lash, gear mesh checking compound, shop press with bearing splitters...if you know what you're doing you can get by without some stuff but that's not ideal.

I suppose if you are merely replacing the differential itself, you could potentially just install it without doing all that other stuff but that's not the right way to do it. That's why I asked what you're doing because once you're at the point of taking the ring gear off you're really not just slapping it all back together. Remember to Loctite the left-hand ring gear bolts.
 
If you're just swapping the carrier, just adjusters and caps. Did you, by chance, take a backlash measurement before pulling the carrier?

Just swap your ring gear over to the Sur-Grip and set backlash. I always heard to put the caps back on the side they came off of, so I do that. I recommend replacing axle seals while your there.

1) Why loctite the left hand ring gear bolts,
Do you run in reverse a lot?
2) And yes there are some special tools required, but if the existing ring and pinion are going back in, the existing shims will be fine, assuming it was set up correctly, so the pinion depth tool would not be needed. And yes, the backlash should have been checked along with a gear mesh imprint prior to disassembly.
3) If the bearing and races look fine, the lube that came out looked fine, no unusual noises.
Why change them out.
I agree that a person with no differential build experience can get in over their head pretty quickly, but putting on additional requirements for no good reason does not help anyone.

Have access to most of the tools I need. Backlash, pinion depth, bearing replacement is all part of the plan. I would rather learn to do it myself than pay someone and have no idea what i paid them for or if the job was done properly. Getting the new complete SURE GRIP unit will help make things a bit easier. Ill have plenty more questions as i go and i appreciate the help thus far from all you guys.
 
As long as you checked backlash before removal, this is an easy swap if all you are doing is install a sure grip diff.

No need for pinion depth if not removing it from the case.

Strong spanner tool is important.
