Oil Pump Leaks…

Well guys, I finally have a running project, but it had an oil leak at the pump gasket. Yesterday I tried to make a new gasket for it. I cut a hole for the shaft and a slit to fit around it since I couldn’t get the pump all the way out. I rubbed some oil on the rim of the pump and pressed the gasket material onto it to get an outline of the shape and I then cut the shape out with an X-Acto knife. Then I ran a bead of gasket maker around the whole thing and pressed it onto the pump, bolted it all up. Now, it leaks WAY WORSE. And I can’t figure out why? Please help me guys I have a pool of oil under the car now. I want to start driving it but it’s just fighting me every step of the way. Could it be because I went with the medium thickness gasket material instead of the thin one? The guy at the store seemed to have his doubts when he saw I got the medium one.
 
Then you're doin somethin wrong. My 64 Valiant has about a 3" narrower engine bay than yours and I can get my pump off by jacking the engine up off the k frame. It's tight, but it'll come out. You have even more room than I do.

Well, the Jack I have rn is small and doesn’t go up very high. My good one was last used by my brother and vanished one day without a trace. Along with my Jack stands… but anyway, the car comes up with the engine a little before the engine finally comes off, and that’s about where my tiny Jack reaches its limit

That's bad news. Also, if you have a manual transmission, you really need to disconnect the Z bar from the bellhousing, or you'll risk bending it or the clutch linkage, possibly the same with automatic linkage, so beware. Both mounts really need to be unbolted from the k frame, because the engine needs to be raised a good bit. On mine, it's such a tight fit, I had to pry the engine over to the driver's side with a prybar to get the extra room needed to get the pump out. It's tight, I'll be the first to admit, but your car should have a good bit more room than mine.

I need a pry bar too. But mines at my brothers house. Looks like I’ll need to make a trip over there tomorrow and pick up more of my stuff. So many mopar/classic car people in my family sometimes it gets hard to keep track of whose crap is at whose house lol
 
The right gasket from fel pro is only like $4 or so
For that price get a couple of them.and you NEVER want to cut a gasket.
I mean cutting one out of gasket paper can be ok, but it has to go on in 1 piece, never split.

I can never find one. No one in town has the fel-pro gaskets for them anymore. Online they range from $8-$12 on average plus shipping. It’s cheaper to make my own at that point. Thinking I should start producing them lol

Now that you mention it, they don't show in stock anywhere. I just got some not too terribly long ago. I'll talk to my guy at oreilly tomorrow and see what's up. Looks like they might be unavailable.
 
Rock Auto is not even showing them. That's a bad sign.
 
I just went and looked in my gasket stash. I have two and I'm sure glad. lol There are some on ebay, but at stupid prices.

That’s what I’m saying. I’m gonna start producing them I think. Maybe partner with my friend who has a cricut machine
 
Put thin coat of Aviation Sealer on both sides of that gasket. Take Brake Parts Cleaner to remove oil film off the block and oil pump so the sealer will seal.

Check your oil pressure sending unit, they can leak like a sieve.

Yeah mine is definitely leaking. What do I do about that?
 
Replace it!!!!! That's what.
I definitely don't have anywhere near that many left but I got a pack of 10 of those gaskets for $20 shipped, from ebay a while back.
